Rancho Santiago Community College District Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education Conversation 1 Course Overview Instructor: Class Information: Conversation 1, Site__, Room__, Days__, Time__ Section Number: Term: Fall 2013 Holidays: Course Description: Introduces conversational strategies in listening, language use, and nonverbal communication. Presents oral skills necessary in initiating, maintaining, and closing conversations. Emphasis on oral skills that assist in social encounters and expand listening and speaking skills. This course is recommended for Beginning ESL 3 and Intermediate ESL 1 students. Open entry/Open exit. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate oral skills in initiating, maintaining, and closing conversations. Assessments/Lessons/Homework Assignments: Students take assessments as provided by the instructor. Classroom lessons/materials focus on the following life skills categories: basic communication, consumer economics, community resources, health and safety, occupational knowledge, and government and law. Homework assignments may be required. Attendance Requirements: Students who do not attend the first class meeting, or are absent for five day classes or four evening classes within a 2-week period without the instructor’s approval may be dropped .
