LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student will identify common mental illnesses and maladaptive behavior; utilize the nursing process to assist in planning care for the individual with mental illness or maladaptive behavior; and discuss trends in the management of the individual requiring psychotherapeutic treatment. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course of study, the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. Identify, assess, and evaluate the nursing process in relation to the major DSM-IV-R classifications of behavior, deviant patterns of behavior, and chemical abuse. Identify current trends of therapy for the mentally ill client, and the nurse’s role in the therapeutic process. Identify major diagnostic categories of mental illness according to DSM-IV-R standards. Utilize appropriate nursing diagnoses to complete a nursing care plan for the patient being treated for a mental health alteration.
