COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will study human behavior with an emphasis on emotional and mental
abnormalities and modes of treatment incorporating the nursing process.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The student will identify common mental illnesses and maladaptive behavior;
utilize the nursing process to assist in planning care for the individual with mental
illness or maladaptive behavior; and discuss trends in the management of the
individual requiring psychotherapeutic treatment.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course of study, the student should be able to:

Identify, assess, and evaluate the nursing process in relation to the major DSM-IV-R
classifications of behavior, deviant patterns of behavior, and chemical abuse.
Identify current trends of therapy for the mentally ill client, and the nurse’s role in the
therapeutic process.
Identify major diagnostic categories of mental illness according to DSM-IV-R standards.
Utilize appropriate nursing diagnoses to complete a nursing care plan for the patient being
treated for a mental health alteration.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Refer to College Catalog (page 21) and Student Handbook (Plainview – page
16). This course is 1 credit hour =16-hours. 2 hours per 16 hours = 2 hours of allowable absence.
(Student Handbook). If the allowable absences are exceeded, you will be dropped from this class.
 A tardy will be given if absent within the first 15 minutes of a class period. A student will not
be admitted to the class if not present within 15 minutes of the start of the class. Three tardies
will result in one hour absence. (Each 50-minute class is considered 1 hour)
