I.
GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION
A. COURSE DESCRIPTION
RNSG 1412, an introduction to Maternal-Child nursing, is designed to provide the
learner with basic knowledge and skills to function within the three roles of nursing
(provider of care, coordinator/manager of care, and member of the profession) while
working with clients, families, and/or groups in the childbearing/childrearing stages
of life in a variety of settings. This course focuses on the care of the bio-psychosocio-spiritual childbearing/childrearing stages of life in a variety of settings. This
course focuses on the care of the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual childbearing/childrearing
family through the use of critical thinking/problem solving, delegation, and nursing
process within an interpersonal and collaborative framework. This course must be
taken and passed concurrently with RNSG 2462.

Supportive foundation knowledge needed to care for the childbearing/childbearing
individual, family, and community includes physical and emotional aspects of nursing
care, integrating developmental, nutritional, and pharmacological concepts. Also
essential in success are concepts of communication, safety, legal ethical issues,
current technology, economics, humanities and biological, social and behavioral
sciences.
1. Meet all requirements for admission into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
2. Prerequisites: RNSG 1513, 1205, 1160, 1115, 1443, 2460, 2213, BIOL 2402,
2420, PSYC 2314.
3. Placement: Spring 2011
4. Time Allotment: Sixteen (16) weeks. The course allows four- (4) semester hour
credits. This includes four (4) hours of classroom and instruction each week.
5. Teaching Strategies: Demonstrations, independent assignment, nursing laboratory,
simulated lab, audiovisual media, student presentations, and group discussion,
selected presentations, and group discussion, selected case presentation material,
review of journal articles, study guides, and lecture seminars.
6. Teaching Personnel: Associate Degree Nursing faculty; guest speakers.
7. In addition to the program educational objectives, all SCANS and ELC's (Entry
Level Competencies) are found throughout the syllabus. The ELC's are
designated by their number in parentheses after each objective in each unit. The
SCANS competencies are identified by number at the beginning of each unit.
B. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of RNSG 1412 the student will meet all Level III
Educational Outcomes as specifically applied to the childbearing and/or childrearing
family. Additional specific information and objectives are found in the course
description and each unit’s objectives.
In addition to the program educational outcomes, all SCANS and ELC's are found
throughout the syllabus. The SCANS competencies are identified by number at the
beginning of each unit. The Level III educational outcomes/ELC's are identified by
number in parenthesis under each role heading in each unit.

PROVIDER OF CARE:
1. Integrate theoretical concepts of the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual sciences with nursing
knowledge and skills to meet the basic needs of clients, families, and/or groups throughout
the life span in a variety of settings.
2. Integrate the five steps of the nursing process into nursing practice.
3. Communicate and collaborate effectively with clients, families, and/or groups in a variety of
settings.
4. Provide safe cost-effective nursing care in collaboration with members of the health care
team using critical thinking, problem solving, and the nursing process in a variety of settings
through direct care, assignment or delegation of care.
5. Integrate principles of teaching learning in providing information to clients, families, and/or
groups regarding promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health or the process of death
and dying.
6. Evaluate responses and outcomes to therapeutic interventions, clinical data and current
literature to make appropriate nursing practice decisions.
MANAGER/COORDINATOR OF CARE:
1. Determine the function within the organizational framework of various health care settings.
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of community resources in the delivery of health care to clients,
families, and/or groups.
3. Coordinate the health care team in delivering care to clients, families, and/or groups.
4. Coordinate appropriate referral sources to meet the needs of clients, families, and/or groups.
5. Utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills in prioritizing the management and
coordination of all aspects of care.
MEMBER OF THE PROFESSION:
1. Assume responsibility for professional and personal growth and development.
2. Assume ethical and legal responsibility and accountability for one’s nursing practice.
3. Act as a health care advocate to provide quality health care for clients, families and/or group.
4. Demonstrate caring behavior when interacting with clients, family and members of health
care profession.

C. COURSE COMPETENCIES
Successful completion of this course requires a grade of “C” or better; satisfactory
total grade point average on examinations and assignments, satisfactory achievement
of unit, objectives; completion of pediatric math competency exam with a grade of
90% of better, completion of standardized tests as applicable to the curriculum, and
regular classroom attendance. Upon successful completion of this course, each
student will have demonstrated accomplishment of the level objectives for the course,
through a variety of modes (exams, role-play, case studies, individual presentation,
and group presentation).

VERIFICATION OF WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES
Successful completion of the ELC statements at the level specified by the course
(Level Objectives) will allow the student to continue to advance within the program.
Upon successful completion of the program students will be eligible to apply to take
the state board exam (NCLEX) for registered nurse licensure.

B.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
The SPC ADNP policy must be followed. Refer to the SPC ADNP Student Nurse
handbook to review this policy. In addition, refer to the attendance policy found in
the South Plains College Catalog.
Lecture attendance is mandatory. The instructor will initiate a student's withdrawal if
a student misses 8 hours or more of class. The student may be referred to the AAS
Committee at the discretion of the instructor. Student is encouraged to review and
follow the attendance policy in the SPC Student Handbook.

C.
ASSIGNMENT POLICY
1.
Completion of Student Contract for RNSG 1412 and 2462
2. .All required work must be in on time in order that the student may benefit from
the corrections and study for future examinations. Assigned outside work is due
on the dates specified by the instructor. Assignments turned in later than the due
date will not be accepted unless the instructors clear the circumstances with the
student. Regardless of the circumstance, late work will be assessed penalty points
by the instructor. The assignment will be docked five (5) points per day for each
late day. The assignment will be docked 2.5 points if turned in after 9:00 am
on the date it is due. An assignment will not be accepted after one week past the
due date; therefore, the grade will be a zero if more than 1 week late.
3. There will be four exams, one final exam, ATI average, and a pediatric
medication test.
a. All exams will be administered in the computer lab. In case of computer
scheduling problems, a paper & pencil test will be given. Students will not be
allowed to have paper to write on during tests. No cell phones, USB drives,
laptop computers are ever allowed in the computer lab; students in violation of
this rule may be dismissed from the program.
b. The student will not retain exams.
c. A student must communicate with the course instructors if unable to take a
test on the scheduled day. If there is no communication by one week from the
date of the exam, or the student doesn't have a legitimate excuse to miss the
exam, a "0" will be given. If a student is deemed by the instructors to have a
legitimate excuse to miss an exam, the next exam will count twice, once for
the missed exam and also for the regularly scheduled exam. (This will be
allowed once in the semester).
d. The final exam must be taken when scheduled or the student may be given an
alternate make-up exam.
e. The Maternity and Pediatric ATI Tests will be taken during the semester. The
two scores will be averaged together & counted as an exam grade. (< level 1
= 65, level 1=75, level 2 = 86, level 3 = 95).
f. Satisfactory completion of pediatric medication administration exam with a
grade of 90% or above. Student will not be allowed to do pediatric clinical
until the exam has been passed. The exam may be retaken twice if not passed
the first time. See student handbook for consequences of not passing.

4. Two databases, one for a pediatric patient and one for an Postpartum patient will
be completed during the semester
a. No photocopies of any part of the patient’s chart or actual parts of the chart
may be taken from the hospital or clinic. Students may be dismissed from the
class and/or program for violating this guideline.

GRADING POLICY
1. The course grade will be compiled from exams for a, total of 80%, and 20% for
the final exam.
2. The final exam will be administered at the end of the semester and is
comprehensive.
3. A student course grade worksheet can be found in Appendix B.
4. All exams and final exam must average 77% or better to pass the course.
5. A student must have received a minimum course grade of "C" or above to
progress to the next nursing course or graduate.
Grading Scale:
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89.99%
C = 77% - 79.99%
D = 60% - 76.99%
F = below 60.00%
6. Failure of either theory or clinical will necessitate repeating all concurrent
courses. When repeating any course, the student is required to retake all aspects
of the course including the required written work.

Satisfactorily complete all course and clinical
assignments as assigned by the instructor.
Be in the clinical at assigned time for student
teaching and assistance.
Take a makeup final exam if the regularly
scheduled exam is missed. The makeup exam
will be taken within one week of the regularly
scheduled exam OR at discretion of the
instructor. Pre-arrangement will be made with
the instructor. Makeup exams may be in essay
and/or short answer form.
Provide a makeup exam for students absent
from the scheduled final exam---after the
student has made the appropriate arrangements
with the instructor.
If an exam is missed by the student for a
legitimate excuse the next exam will count in
the missed exam grades place. (This will only
be allowed once during the semester). If the
student does not have an excused absence a
zero (0) will be given for that missed exam
grade.

administration of medication on the pediatric
clinical unit.
