TRADITIONAL FULBRIGHT STUDENT AWARDS FOR CANADIAN STUDENTS - 2014 Canada-U.S. Fulbright Student Awards are intended for Canadian graduate students and junior professionals who wish to enrol in a graduate studies program in the United States. Applications for acceptance into American or Canadian graduate programs should coincide with your application to the Fulbright program. See www.fulbright.ca . Please note that all award recipients must be affiliated with an institution in the US and are responsible for securing such affiliation. Applicants are encouraged to establish an affiliation with the intended host institution at an early stage. Candidates must be accepted or anticipating acceptance into a graduate program. Successful candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree prior to taking up their Fulbright award. Canada-U.S. Fulbright awards offer a unique opportunity to explore important contemporary issues relevant to Canada and the United States and the relationship between the two countries. While the competition is officially “field open,” applications in the following areas are given preference: * comparative public policy * North American integration * communications and culture * indigenous issues * border issues * Canada-U.S. relations * international trade * security * ecology and the environment * law * public health * Canadian and American studies Annual Competition Opens: May 15, 2014 Application Deadline: November 15, 2014 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Canadian citizen at time of application (permanent resident status / landed immigrant status are not sufficient) English language proficiency Received a bachelor's degree prior to proposed grant start date You are not eligible for a Canada-U.S. Fulbright Award if: You currently hold permanent residency status in the intended host country You are currently residing in or enrolled at a university in the intended host country You have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six year period immediately preceding the date of application You have received a previous Fulbright Student Award You are a Canadian applicant and you are a dual citizen of Canada and the United States Please note that Canadian Fulbright Award recipients must enter the United States on a J-1 visa under the Exchange Visitor Program. Grantees must meet current J-1 visa requirements, including the return residency requirement. Accordingly, grantees are required to leave the United States for at least two years at the conclusion of their award. Fulbright: March 5, 2014 -1- AWARD PROVISIONS Fulbright scholarships are granted for periods of nine months. The award is a fixed sum US$15,000 for one nine-month academic year beginning in September. Grantees are expected to use the award to cover necessary expenses such as housing, travel, school fees and other academic expenditures. Basic health insurance is also provided, along with visa services. Fulbright enrichment opportunities are also available on a competitive basis. All awards are subject to available funding, approval by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB), and compliance with FSB guidelines. APPLICATION PROCESS Detailed application instructions may be found within the application package itself, which is available electronically at www.fulbright.ca/en/graduatestudent.asp. Completed applications should be returned to the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program as soon as possible. Applications and supporting documents must be post-marked no later than November 15 of any year in order to be considered for the awards to be taken up the following September. APPLICATION CHECK LIST (See form for details) □ Application form □ Statement of proposed study or research – (not to exceed 4 pages) - a clear discussion of the proposed field of study including specific areas of interest within the field, and planned or required research papers to be undertaken, the degree expected and anticipated a date of completion, an explanation of the choice of institutional affiliation, the project goals and end-product and the significance of the project in the field. You must say why it essential that you be resident in the US to complete the work. □ Curriculum Vitae (not to exceed 4 pages) □ Personal Statement – a one-page narrative discussing your professional and academic development and future plans. With reference to your personal qualities and experience, discuss your ability to represent Canada in the US. See form for details. □ Letter of Invitation (Acceptance) – a letter of acceptance from your host institution or other correspondence. □ Confidential Letters of Reference – letters from three persons qualified to evaluate your academic and professional development and personal suitability. These should be professors with whom you have studied or someone who has supervised you in the workplace. Cover sheets are included in the application form. □ English Language Proficiency Report – If English is not your first language. Form is included in the application form. □ Confidential Transcripts – from every post-secondary institution you have attended. These are to be mailed directly to the Foundation by the issuing institution. □ Canadian Student Application Package Checklist APPLICATION ASSISTANCE Your personal statement and statement of proposed study or research are key to your application success. You should plan to draft these well in advance of the November deadline and work with a mentor to ensure that they are as complete as they can be. It is suggested that you begin drafting your documents the summer before you apply. Normally many drafts are required.
