Reporting Non-Attendance and Last Dates of Attendance As recipients of Title IV funding and Veterans Administration benefits for the GI Bill (Post 9/11), the University of Michigan-Flint must be in compliance with federal regulations. Implications for non-compliance by the University include the repayment of tuition payments to the federal government and possible loss of future Title IV funding. The potential for lost revenue is great. What does this mean for faculty? Faculty must report the non-attendance of any student in their courses within the first 10 days of the semester to the Registrar. When submitting final grades a last date of attendance must be submitted if a failing grade is assigned. Examples of last dates of attendance include the date of the last exam taken, the last assignment submitted, discussion board postings, or quizzes as documented by the course syllabus. As a result, faculty do not need to take attendance in class given that class participation can be documented through these other mechanisms. What does this mean for the university? Reporting non-attendance in the first 10 days and entering last dates of attendance at the time of grade submission allows the university to accurately report student attendance and stay in compliance with federal regulations for Title IV funds, Veterans benefits, and enrollment reporting. With the support of the Provost, all instructors are asked to report non-attendance to the Office of the Registrar by the add/drop deadline at 5:00 pm. Requests received after this date and time cannot be honored. How do I drop students for non-attendance? You or the department secretary may email me with the following required information: Student Name and UMID Course name, number and section number How many absences constitute non-attendance? The rule of thumb is two missed class periods or non-attendance up to the add/drop deadline at 5:00 pm. Students who have not participated in their online class in the first 5 calendar days of the semester can be dropped at the instructor's request.
