POFI 2340-151 (Fall 2015) Page 8 Course Structure This course is an online course, which means that you will access course information and respond to me through the use of the Internet. Blackboard and Paradigm SNAP are used to deliver and manage this course. Please take a moment to read over the information at the Blackboard site before you get started. If the online environment is new to you or if you have problems of any nature, please do not let yourself become overwhelmed or spend hours of your time trying to figure out how to access something. You have many sources available to you for help. You can contact me by e-mail, telephone, or come by my office. Attendance Policy Even though this is an online class, students still have to access the course on a regular basis. The Blackboard software used to manage this online course tracks student logins, tracking when and where the student has been in the course. Accessing this course on a regular basis is extremely important in order to meet the objectives of this course. You will feel more at ease with the materials if you stay in touch with what is going on. Minimum log in for the course is at least two (2) days per week. However, I recommend checking in once a day if possible for announcements. I can see how many times you log in! Withdrawal Policy If for any reason the student is unable to complete the course requirements, it is the student’s responsibility to initiate their own withdrawal by the 1st drop date for the semester. An administrative drop by the instructor in this course will, in most cases, result in the student receiving an “F” (not an “X”). The last day to drop a class is Wednesday, November 18, 2015. However, always discuss this with your instructor before dropping. Academic Integrity – Read Carefully! It is the aim of the faculty of South Plains College to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. The attempt of any student to present as his or her own any work which he or she has not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a most serious offense and renders the offender liable to serious consequences, possibly suspension. This means all work you complete for this class including quizzes, homework, etc. SNAP utilizes an anti-cheating feature. Students should refer to the SPC General Catalog policy regarding consequences for cheating and plagiarism. POFI 2340-151 (Fall 2015) Page 9 Student Conduct Rules and regulations relating to the students at South Plains College are made with the view of protecting the best interests of the individual, the general welfare of the entire student body and the educational objectives of the college. A high standard of conduct is expected of all students. Student should refer to the SPC General Catalog policy regarding student conduct. Grading Policy Chapter Tutorials Chapter Document Assessments Unit Performance Assessments Fifteen Concept Exams (over reading material) 15% 30% 30% 25% 100% A perfect assignment will receive a score of 100. Ten points will be deducted for omissions or accidental text additions as well as for typographical errors; ten points will be deducted for each major formatting error; five points will be deducted for minor formatting errors. In short problems, such as announcements/tables, additional points may be deducted. Just proofread carefully and you’ll be fine! Final grades will be based on the following grading scale: 90-100=A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, Below 60=F Assignment Policy You will be required to complete about two chapters each week. Some weeks also have a Unit Assessment. We have eight weeks to cover fifteen chapters. Under Weekly Assignments you will see all of your assignments listed with their deadlines. Make sure you plan ahead to give yourself plenty of time to complete the problems for each chapter. Start your work early in the week. The worst thing you can do is start your work on Sunday night. Proofread carefully! All assignments must be completed in order to satisfactorily complete the requirements of this course. Problems that are not turned in will be assigned a grade of 0. All deadlines will be on Sunday night at 11:59 PM. I do not accept late work after this deadline. Blackboard will not allow you to turn in your work after this deadline. Important Note! You are required to upload/send the exercises (work done from the green boxes within each chapter) to me by attaching all of them to an external e-mail to pdennis@southplainscollege.edu. Attach all of the exercises for each chapter to one e-mail. For example, in Chapter 16, you would attach every exercise you did to one e-mail and in the subject line please type your name and Chapter 16. Do this before attempting the Chapter Document Assessments or Unit Assessments. POFI 2340-151 (Fall 2015) Page 10 Directions for Turning in Assessments at End of Each Chapter 1. Click on Weekly Assignments on the blue menu in BB. 2. Read the “To Do” list. If an assessment is not listed in BB, it means that you don’t have to do it. 3. Click on the hyperlink for each assigned assessment. Read any additional instructions. 4. Click “Browse Computer”, navigate to your flash drive, select the required file, and attach it in BB. 5. Hit Submit. 6. Call or see me if you need help. Don’t wait until the weekend to do your work! These are the problems I grade, so proofread carefully. If you don't know what a proofreading symbol means, there's a page in the back of the book that explains it. SNAP Work (Tutorials and Chapter Exams) You don't need to send me results for anything done in SNAP. I can automatically see your work in SNAP. I manually move those grades over to BB. I don't start to grade any work in SNAP until after the Sunday night deadline. Starting your work early in the week really is important so you can ask questions during the week, not on the weekend. Remember, you can use computer labs at any of our campuses during the week. Examination Policy Fifteen SNAP Concept Exams will be given over the terminology that is introduced in your text reading material. You will be given two attempts for each chapter exam. If you are content with the first attempt, that’s all you need to do. If you use both attempts, I will record the higher of the two grades. The grade will appear in the BB gradebook the following week. You are responsible for reading the assigned material. There will be three major Unit Assessments, the last of which will be counted as your final exam. Remember to check the calendar for all dates and deadlines. No time extensions will be given. Unit Assessments There will be three major Unit Assessments, the last of which will be counted as your final exam. Remember to check the calendar for all dates and deadlines. You should receive a message that states you have successfully completed the tutorial if you do it correctly. If you don’t get this message, you should repeat it. If you successfully complete all assigned tutorials, you will receive a grade of 100 for your work. Remember, this will post to BB until the following week. 3. Complete the exercises within the assigned chapter. These are not graded but are very important since they teach you how to do the assessments. Send your exercises by attaching them to an external e-mail. Send them to pdennis@southplainscollege.edu. 4. Click on Weekly Assignments on the blue menu in BB. Complete the assessments (at end of assigned chapter) and submit through BB. Remember, these are graded. Before you click Submit, make sure you have attached the correct file. 5. The questions will vary from one attempt to another. POFI 2340-151 (Fall 2015) Page 12 Additional Course Information 1. Log in at least two (2) times a week (minimum) but to be on the safe side, I recommend logging in daily. 2. Check for announcements/mail. 3. Buy a textbook. Sometimes students are faced with the decision of whether to remain at home with their children, bring children with them to class, or be absent from class. The following guidelines address concerns for the safety of children on campus and provide for an environment conducive to learning: 1. Students are not allowed to bring children to class and will be asked to leave in the interest of providing an environment conducive for all students enrolled in the class. Students are responsible for adherence to the attendance requirements set forth by the instructor in the course syllabus. 2. Children may not be left unattended. In order to provide for the safety of children on campus, parents or other guardians are responsible for supervising children while utilizing services or conducting business on campus. 3. Disruptive children will not be allowed to interfere with college business. Parents or other guardians are responsible for supervising and controlling the behavior of children they have brought on campus.
