b. Teaching Tips--Cecile Roberti will contact Shawn Parker to see if he’d like to write a tip based on his

c. Spring book club—Suzanne McCormack (Teaching First-Year College Students)
“At Flanagan we had five participants at the first meeting, including myself. I have recently learned from Michele that we have
additional people/persons coming to the next meeting in March. Everyone there but me was new to CCRI within the last two
years. I know that they were all attracted to the idea of discussing first-year students, but the conversation veered off of the
book fairly quick as people were interested in hearing other faculty members’ experiences in the classroom. A lot of our
discussion, therefore, was based loosely on the book and more specifically on challenges faced here at CCRI. More than once I
asked if people wanted to talk more directly about the book/reading but they seemed relieved to be sharing difficult
experiences with other new faculty. The greatest benefit, therefore, of the “book club” meetings – so far at least – is having a
common purpose for which to bring people together who otherwise might never meet. We had 4 different departments
represented by the 5 participants. Overall, it was a very positive first meeting and I know that the people who attended are
planning to participate in March as well.”
