Last week we looked at arithmetic sequences and series. This week we turn our attention to other types of
sequences and series.
Sum of Odd Integers
a.
Find the sum of the first two positive odd integers.
b.
Find the sum of the first three positive odd integers.
c.
Find the sum of the first four positive odd integers.
d.
Notice a pattern? What is the sum of the first n positive odd integers?
e.
What is the sum of the first 31 odd integers?

Find the sum of the first two positive integers.

This pattern isn’t as easy to see...here is a hint: Take the last number in the series, n, and
multiple it by n + 1. Notice a relation to the sum?

What is the sum of the first 31 integers?

There is a trick to quickly counting the number of elements in a sequence.
Find the number of elements in each sequence.
a.
56, 57, 58, ..., 98
b.
20, 30, 40, ..., 120
c.
405, 410, 415, ..., 735
