CHS PTO Meeting Minutes October 4, 2010 6:00 to 7:00 PM 1. Welcome, Introductions Peggy Bowe and Christy Breckenridge opened the meeting by welcoming everyone to the fourth PTO meeting of the 2010-2011 school year. Twenty people were in attendance: Peggy Bowe, Christy Breckenridge, Susan Ryffel, Jane Callahan, Louise Losos, Patty Paster, Mary Hummell, Yun-Ho Sikora, Karen Stern, Kathleen Matheny, Liz Glynias, Sue Hodapp, Jan Goodman, Susan Casteel, Mike Nelke, Lori Elliot, Jill Belsky, Carol Staenberg, Sally Harrison, and Lisa Avery. 2. Treasurer’s Report Proposed Budget Jane Callahan, PTO Treasurer, directed the group to the budget information posted online. Jane reported that the PTO is running behind in PTO dues, and that the bonfire was under budget. Patty Paster asked if all after-prom checks had been posted, there may be a $200 discrepancy; Jane will research. Louise asked about a bill for student planners. Christy Breckenridge will make sure that Jane gets a copy. 3. Committee Reports Staff Appreciation Christy reported for Lori Cohen. Halloween treats were distributed to staff. Lori is looking for more bakers, contact her directly. She will be contacting Mike Nelke about a holiday cookie date, to be completed before winter break. Parent Connections Jill Belsky reported that Sophomore event is planned, and asked about a budget for the event. She will confirm that there is $200 available in the budget for the November 13th event, 6:00 – 9:00, finger foods and cocktails will be provided. An email blast went out today via Cristine Perrino. Yun-Ho reported that the November 13th Freshman Progressive Dinner is planned, 71 people are signed up. The $15 fee will www.clayton.k12.mo.us/chs/pto cover food, the committee is working out the expense for wine. Kathleen Matheny reported that there will be postcards and an email blast for the November 12 Junior Class Trivia Night. Students are providing food, the class officers are doing most of the planning. The Senior Class cocktail party at Liz Smith’s house is November 6th, 42 people are signed up. Centennial Plaza Jan Goodman reported that they have received $50,000 from 140 families, $25,000 from the Staenberg family, $2,500 each from 4 corporate donors, and the potential for a large donation from Centene which will include naming rights. Sue Hodapp reported that they will be meeting with Deanne Lane, Centene representative, about 3 different possible renderings for the Centene name. The final step will be approval from the Board of Education, hopefully at the November 17th meeting. The group expressed their thanks for all of the committee’s hard work on this exciting project. Fund raising will end on December 1st, work on the Plaza will begin and complete in fall of 2011. Lisa Avery mentioned that she will be soliciting the cross country parents for a brick, and Jan will follow up with Mike Nelke on a brick purchased for the class of 2010. After Prom/Prom Patty Paster reported for herself and her committee co-chairs: Terry Inder, Julie Praiss and Renee Kanefield. The contract from Tropicanna is in hand, the plan is to end After Prom around 2:00 or 2:30 a.m. The rental price has gone up, but the alley will be paying for some of the costs for security guards for the night. The committee has contracted the photographer from last year’s event, and they are planning a casino night with prizes. Subcommittees have formed and are complete. Louise Losos shared a video of a possible activity for the night – Sumo wrestling. Based on the discussion at the meeting, Julie Praiss will contact Mike Nelke about getting students involved in planning activities for the event. 4. Principal’s Report Louise Losos reported that the second quarter has begun. The open position in the Engineering Department has been filled, and progress is being made on filling the College Counselor www.clayton.k12.mo.us/chs/pto position. The Halloween Dance was a success: 400 students attended; costumes were creative, more modest; and, the DJ playlist seemed to be more popular. A scuffle that broke out at the end of the dance will be handled with appropriate consequences. Fall sports are ending, with boy’s soccer, football and cross country continuing to compete at District and State levels. Winter sports begin on November 8th. Report cards are out, the November newsletter goes out on November 15th, there will not be a December newsletter. There was some general discussion about the upcoming election, and how to communicate school issues to our elected officials. Christy Breckenridge asked Louise if there would be interest in including a teacher representative on the PTO. Louis will investigate. 5.
