Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure
Department of English and Foreign Languages
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES
EXPECTATIONS FOR
REAPPOINTMENT, PROMOTION, AND TENURE (RPT)
In addition to the FSU Guidelines for Reappoint, Tenure and Promotion and the Faculty
Handbook, the expectations of the Department of English and Foreign Languages are:
A. TEACHING:
1. Clearly developed course objectives and requirements, instructional materials,
grading procedures and evaluation materials, integrating technology when possible.
2. An active role in departmental discussions regarding curriculum and program
development and achievement of program goals.
3. Developing and practicing assessment of student performance consistent with the
department’s goals.
4. Documentation of teaching effectiveness using instruments and procedures approved
by the department, for example, Peer Review, Student Evaluation, evaluation by
mentor, videotaping of classes, or participating in instructional workshops.
5. Continued professional development in teaching (attending workshops, professional
meetings, and participation in faculty development activities).
B. SCHOLARSHIP ACTIVITY:
RESEARCH: Research and scholarly activities must be of high quality, reveal consistent
research and scholarly efforts. Research and scholarly activities should reflect regional and
national recognition among one’s peers in the field inside and outside the University.
Criteria include, but are not limited, to the following:
1. A productive record of research activity, which reveals significant and developing
achievements in the field of specialization.
2. Publications in the form of refereed articles in journals, which are recognized as
scholarly in content.
3. Non-refereed scholarly publications.
4. Invited scholarly papers presented at professional meetings.
5. Scholarly papers presented at professional meetings.
6. Securing grants.
7. Honors and awards.
While at the rank of Assistant Professor, the candidate must:
Publish in refereed journals, or author a book or portions of a book, or produce publications
related to the faculty member’s discipline, or conduct appropriate artistic or scholarly
activities, or produce some acceptable combination of the above.
While at the rank of Associate Professor, the candidate must:
Publish in refereed journals, or author a book or portions of a book, or produce publications
related to the faculty member’s discipline, or conduct appropriate artistic or scholarly
activities, or produce some acceptable combination of the above.
While at the rank of Professor, the candidate must:
Publish in refereed journals, or author a book or portions of a book, or produce publications
related to the faculty member’s discipline, or conduct appropriate artistic or scholarly
activities, or produce some acceptable combination of the above in the faculty member’s
discipline during the last five years, including the one since the initial appointment to the
university.
The category of research is the most important, and there should be no doubt about the
acceptability of the quality and quantity of the candidate’s research, and such acceptability
should be determined at the departmental level. By the end of the sixth academic year, the
candidate will offer two articles in print in refereed or the published equivalent of such
articles.
It is the responsibility of the candidate to make every effort to ensure the acceptability of all
research and other activities offered in consideration for tenure.
In the event a candidate fails to secure tenure, it remains the privilege of the department to
invite that candidate to accept a yearly-renewable position.
C. SERVICE: Candidates must demonstrate their involvement and leadership in
department, college, and university committees, functions, and community service.
FOR REAPPOINTMENT AS ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
In addition to the FSU Guidelines for Tenure and Promotion, and those in the Faculty
Handbook, the Department of English and Foreign Languages has the following expectations:

Evidence of ability to organize course materials, content, and presentations in
in order to accomplish teaching effectiveness.
Willingness to take an active role in departmental discussions regarding curriculum
and program development.
Evidence of potential to maintain a level of student performance consistent with
Departmental and degree program standards.
Evidence of ability to develop strong teaching skills.
Evidence of potential for excellence in advising.
B. SCHOLARSHIP ACTIVITY:

Evidence of developing ability in research or other relevant scholarly activity, through
submission of thesis or dissertation or other research papers, published or
unpublished, or papers presented at scholarly conferences.
C. SERVICE:

Evidence of the ability and willingness to serve the department, college, university,
and community.
Willingness to take an active role in student advising including students’ coursework,
programs choices, and career planning.
APPOINTMENT AS OR PROMOTION TO ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
A. TEACHING: The teaching criteria for promotion or appointment to Associate Professor
are the same as for permanent tenure. In addition, faculty promotion to Associate
Professor must have evidence of consistent teaching effectiveness and demonstrated
leadership in the area of teaching.
Additional criteria include, but are not limited to, the following:

Evidence of consistent course improvements and curriculum development.
Leadership efforts in curriculum and program development.
Leadership efforts in teaching effectiveness, for example the development of
instructional tools, workshops, and presentations.
Sustained commitment to faculty development.
B. SCHOLARSHIP: The scholarship criteria for promotion or appointment to Associate
Professor are the same as those for permanent tenure. Evidence should be presented of a
sustained record of research and creative activities of high quality.
C. SERVICE: The service expectations for promotion or appointment to Associate
Professor are the same as permanent tenure. Evidence should reflect a sustained
record of service to department, college, university, and community.
APPOINTMENT AS OR PROMOTION TO PROFESSOR
In addition to the FSU Guidelines for Tenure and Promotion, and those in the Faculty
Handbook, in the Department of English and Foreign Languages, suggested expectations
are:
A. TEACHING: The teaching criteria for appointment as or promotion to Professor are
the same as Associate Professor.
Additional criteria include, but are not limited to, the following:

Sustained and effective leadership in curriculum and program development.
Sustained results from leadership in teaching effectiveness.
Sustained faculty development to enhance teaching.
B. SCHOLARSHIP: The scholarship criteria for appointment as or promotion to Professor
are the same as for Associate Professor.
Additional criteria include, but are not limited to, the following:
1.
A record of high quality in scholarship and creative activities has been
established.
2. The candidate’s scholarship record of research and activity reveals evidence
of achievement in the area of specialization.
3. The candidate receives honors, awards, citations, critical reviews, and other forms
of recognition.
C. SERVICE: The service criteria for appointment as or promotion to Professor are the
same as for Associate Professor..
Additional criteria include, but are not limited to, the following:

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
Research:

Research includes serious inquiry or examination resulting in the discovery and
interpretation of knowledge, revision of accepted theories in the light of new
knowledge, or practical application of such new or revised theories.
Research productivity is typically measured by the publication of articles in archival
journals, or in conference proceedings, or in books, or in invited lectures, or patents, or
original software, or individual and block grants, or in research awards and honors.
Scholarly activity:
1.
Scholarly activity includes the creation, evaluation, dissemination, and application
of knowledge.
2. Scholarly activities are typically measured by the publication of articles in archival
journals, or in conference proceedings, or in books, or invited lectures, or in conference
participation such as symposium or paper and poster presentations or discussion
locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally.
Service: Service includes formal and informal professional assignments or activities on
behalf of the Department, College, University, and profession and the community at large.
Expectations regarding quality of service contributions increase as a faculty member’s career
progresses. The minimum required for permanent tenure and promotion depends upon rank.
Service contributions include, but are not limited to, the following:
A. Department: Department committee participation, or area coordinator, or student
advising, or special assignments from the chair.
B. College and University: Participation in committees and assignments at the college
and university level.
C. Professional: Participation in activities relevant to the faculty member’s area of
expertise. Activities include, but are not limited to, participation in professional
organizations.
D. Community: Service may include participation in regional, national, or international
community activities directly related to the faculty member’s profession, such as lectures
and presentations, and professional advice to non-profit agencies. Community
involvement may serve as additional evidence of service but does not replace
involvement at the department, college, university, or professional level.
