Ryerson Dances is an excellent opportunity to experience a wide variety of styles from five diverse and renowned choreographers. Ryerson’s Dance Program is known across Canada for its high standards and versatile dancers, and as always, this showcase promises an array of original, dynamic works and performances. Ryerson Dances 2006 is produced by RTS Dance Program Director, Nadia Potts, who has been teaching ballet at Ryerson since her retirement from the National Ballet of Canada in 1986. During her illustrious 20-year career as principal dancer, she performed throughout the world and partnered by renowned artists such as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolph Nureyev. Teaching has always run tandem to her performing career and she has taught at the National Ballet School, the Banff Centre of Fine Arts, York University and George Brown College, as well as conducting numerous master classes and workshops. During her tenure at RTS, Potts has established a reputation for running one of the country’s finest post-secondary dance programs. Ryerson Dances 2006 includes the work of some of Canada’s most innovative and creative choreographers: Roberto Campanella, Robert Glumbek, Yvonne Ng, Malgorzata Nowacka and Vicki St. Denys bring an explosive mix of eclectic choreographic styles. Each choreographer has been commissioned to create or remount an original piece. Through Ryerson Dances, choreographers often begin lasting professional relationships with Ryerson students, and many works go on to receive performances by professional companies. Roberto Campanella was trained in Rome at the Scuola Italiana di Danza Contemporanea. After retiring as a soloist from the National Ballet of Canada in 1996, he graduated from the National Ballet School’s teacher training program with distinction. Campanella is a guest teacher for The National Ballet of Canada and Stuttgart Ballet as well as many companies in Italy, Korea and Japan. He has also choreographed for such companies as L’Astragale, Ballet Jorgen, Enchine-do, and Corpus and is currently the artistic director of the highly acclaimed ProArteDanza. Originally from Poland, Robert Glumbek, has worked internationally with acclaimed choreographers such as John Neumeier, Maurice Bejart, Hans Van Manen and John Butler. He has created works for The National Finnish Theatre, Mannheim Ballet, Princess Productions and ProArteDanza. Glumbek was also instrumental in the creation of Desrosiers Dance Theatre here in Canada. A popular guest-teacher, Glumbek still finds time to teach internationally and locally at The National Ballet of Canada, Dance Teq and the Randolph Academy. Born and raised in Singapore, Yvonne Ng, is an unstoppable force on the Canadian and international dance scene. Ng is a dancer, producer, choreographer, teacher and artistic director for Tiger Princess Dance Projects. She has been honoured with many awards including a Dora Mavor Moore Award in 2000 for her performance in Peter Chin’s BITE, the prestigious K.M. Hunter Dance Award in 2002, and the Chalmers Arts Fellowship in 2003. Ng has also served on the board of Directors for both the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists and Dance Umbrella of Ontario. Malgorzata Nowacka has excited audiences and critics alike with her hard-edged choreography, bold and athletic performances and her strongly defined artistic vision. In 1999, Nowacka founded The Chimera Project which continues to create a significant mark on Toronto’s cultural landscape. In 2003 she received the Toronto Emerging Artist Award and was featured as one of the most promising young Canadian choreographers in the documentary series Moments in Motion. Nowacka’s work I can almost has also been adapted to a Bravo!FACT film produced by Kathleen Smith. Vicki St. Denys has toured and performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and Japan. As well as being a faculty member at RTS in both the Dance and Acting programs, she offers professional-level jazz classes at Dance-Teq and is a guest teacher and choreographer at the Banff Centre of Fine Arts each summer. St. Denys is in great demand as a teacher and choreographer and travels frequently to various organizations in Canada and the U.S. as a guest. Lighting Designer David Morrison is very pleased to be back for his ninth Ryerson Dances. Morrison has lit over 200 dance premieres in theatres across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. His work can be seen in the repertoires of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Danny Grossman Dance Company, Dancemakers, Ballet B.C., Alberta Ballet, the Royal Ballet of Flanders (Belgium) and Nederlands Dans Theater (Netherlands).
