Lope de Vega’s Fuenteovejuna (1612) is one of the most famous of all classical Spanish plays.
Based on an actual peasant uprising that took place in 1476, it tells the story of an imperious
military governor and war hero (The Grand Commander). He tyrannizes a small village called
Fuenteovejuna, demanding a right to all the women, married and not, until the village, led by one
headstrong peasant girl (who claims she has no time for love), finally rebels and lynches him.
These dramatic events are complemented by a charming pastoral love story, and the courtly
intrigue surrounding the succession of Ferdinand and Isabel to the crown of Castille. As Professor
Craig S. Walker writes, “the play explores themes of nobility, honour, love and the contrast
between city and country life. It also provides a fascinating insight into a Renaissance
understanding of the matter that, today, we would call human rights”. One of the most prolific
46 Gerrard Street East playwrights ever, Lope de Vega led a life nearly as eventful as his plays, by turns a drop-out,
Toronto, ON
scholar, soldier, sailor, prisoner, exile, lover, father, husband, adulterer and priest.
