Job Purpose
To lead classes/sessions in subject specialism on the demonstration of whatever. To
support teaching through the demonstration of exercises in line with agreed learning
outcomes of the course. To lead sessions on whatever and to oversee students carrying out
practical exercises. To offer assistance, as appropriate, including the provision of detailed
explanations of how the activity relates to the wider area of study.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To lead classes/sessions in the subject specialism on the demonstration of whatever
(both small groups and one-to-one) and to answer questions related to those
demonstrations, including the provision of detailed explanations of how the activity relates
to the wider area of study.
2. To assist/give guidance, where required, to students who are carrying out practical
exercises.
3. To be aware of any health and safety implications, and take action to maintain a safe
environment, raising any concerns with the course organiser.
4. To contribute to the development of teaching material and workbooks.
5. Where required, to assist in marking student tests set by the course organiser using
defined marking criteria where marking requires little or no interpretation.
6. Where required, to provide factual feedback to students and the course organiser.
7. Where required, to ensure that equipment, exercise or process is functional and/or
material for demonstrations, exercises etc is prepared before the start of a session.
Job Features
Planning and Organising
Demonstrators must ensure they are familiar with the subject/class/session to be
demonstrated and clarify anything where necessary with the course organiser/work
supervisor beforehand. Must ensure they are aware of the relevant learning outcomes for
the course.
May be required to troubleshoot any problems with the subject/class/session.
Planning may be required to deliver the prescribed tasks within preset parameters of session.
Decision Making
May mark simple student reports against set criteria. Would feedback to course
organiser/work supervisor any concerns e.g. about student performance. May make
suggestions to course organiser on ways in which sessions could be
amended/improved.
Key Contacts/Relationships
Students: demonstrate mainly to undergraduate students; In academic areas: Course
organiser and other academic staff; In staff areas: relevant technical or supervisory staff
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
First degree in subject specialism.
Expert knowledge of relevant subject/class/session;
Awareness of learning outcomes of course;
Excellent communication skills;
Previous experience of demonstrating to students
8: Dimensions
No financial responsibilities. Not responsible for any other members of staff. Will lead
sessions un-assisted.
