Although the overall score told us that students overwhelmingly surpassed the required goal, we can see that some students achieved passing scores or higher by scoring higher in some categories over others (Vocabulary Skills, Grammar Skills, Syntax, Spelling/Accentuation, and Punctuation) and not achieving the same consistent score in all categories. Analyzing the scores in each category enabled us, the committee, to see where students need additional attention. The data tells us that students demonstrated high skills in Vocabulary (average score of 96.6%), Syntax (99.4%), and Punctuation (96.9%). Students, on the other hand, demonstrated just average skills in Grammar (71.7%) and in Spelling/Accentuation (78.5%). In this assessment, the data suggests improving grammar and spelling skills. Based on the results of the assessment and the input from the members of the committee and instructors who participated in the assessment, we make the following recommendations to the Spanish discipline. We need to encourage instructors to require additional assignments that will help students strengthen their grammar and spelling skills. We also need to encourage more focus on testing in which a large focus is placed on grammar, spelling and accentuation. 1 5.
