(as stated in the ACTFL proficiency guidelines) employing stock language, first level elementary grammar structures, vocabulary, and syntax.

Write in Spanish with novice to novice-mid fluency and accuracy

(as stated in the ACTFL proficiency guidelines) using rudimentary phrases, first level elementary grammar structures, vocabulary, and syntax.

Means: Students will be asked a series of questions orally. The questions will be based on themes, vocabulary, and grammar structures covered in the course textbook chapters. Each student will be interviewed individually.

The interviews will be part of an exam, recorded using a digital recorder, stored electronically, and scored using a departmental rubric.

Students from all Spanish

Means: Students will be given a writing exercise embedded in an exam in which they must provide five short descriptive sentences using the verb

Although the overall score told us that students overwhelmingly surpassed the required goal, we can see that some students achieved passing scores or higher by scoring higher in some categories over others (Vocabulary

Based on the results of the assessment and the input from the members of the committee and instructors who

Analyzing the scores in each category enabled us, the committee, to see where students need additional attention. The data tells us that students demonstrated high skills in Vocabulary (average score of 89.7%), Syntax

Spanish discipline. We need to encourage instructors to require additional assignments that will help students strengthen their spelling skills. These assignments are available on the online CENTRO system currently being used.

They require students to both improve their spelling skills as well as practice identifying stress points and phrases in order to apply the rules of accentuation correctly.

We also need to encourage more focus on the teaching of grammar and testing in which a large focus is placed on spelling and accentuation.

Means: Students will be required to read a cultural narrative in their textbook. They will then answer comprehension check questions that will be embedded in their fourth exam of the semester. The questions will be administered in

Elegancia , a department store that will be read orally. After listening to the narrative, students will answer comprehension check questions that will appear in written form. This exercise will be embedded in their third exam.

Moreover, this exercise will be administered in all course sections and will be evaluated based on a departmental rubric.

Criteria: 70% of students must score a minimum of 70% on this exercise.

Means: Students will be required to read and analyze a cultural narrative on a Spanish
