Course Description:
Students continue to develop writing skills in the context of guided discourse on
personal topics with an emphasis on logical thought and mechanics.
3 credits
Prerequisites: Successful completion of EAP 0140 or equivalent proficiency
Co-requisite: EAP 0240L
Competency 1: The student will produce a series of related sentences on personal topics with an
emphasis on logical thought and the development of writing fluency and vocabulary.
Competency 2: The student will write related simple and compound sentences appropriate to the
level in Standard English and attend to grammatical form and word order in order to develop writing
accuracy.
Competency 3: The student will proofread and edit grammar and sentence structure appropriate
to the level.
Competency 4: The student will use appropriate reference tools to edit writing.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the
principles of academic writing as pertained to following Learning Outcomes:
1. The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to write simple and compound
sentences using appropriate level two grammar i.e. verbs, prepositions, subject/verb
agreement, mechanics, transitional devices and word usage applied toward short
paragraph formats.
2. The student will be able to illustrate knowledge of the descriptive and process writing in
a short paragraph utilizing word processing skills.
3. The student will be able to identify and apply topic, supporting and concluding sentences
to a short academic paragraph.
4. The student will be able to illustrate usage of an organizational plan in the writing
process which includes the usage of reference materials.
5. The student will be able to illuminate aspects of cultural perspectives about a variety of
topics or themes.
Attendance Policy: You should come to every class in order to obtain the most
complete educational experience. Participation in this class is only possible if you
attend class. If you arrive late to class it is your responsibility to notify the instructor
at the end of class in order to change your absence to a tardy; otherwise you will be
marked absent. Please note:
 3 consecutive absences = student automatically dropped
 4 absences
= student automatically dropped
 3 late arrivals
= 1 absence
Participation
Participation is an integral part of the learning process. ENGLISH ONLY is spoken in
our classroom and active participation is stressed in order to help you improve your
reading, writing, and oral communication skills. Your success in improving your
English skills will depend very heavily on your ability to practice English every minute
that you can.
Homework
Homework must be done on the day that it is assigned. You may be required to turn
it in or to use it for an in-class assignment or activity. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS
WILL BE ACCEPTED.

No make-up exams allowed unless you have prior permission from me. If you are
absent on the day of an exam with an excusable absence, please see me before the
next class session to discuss possible make-up alternatives. If you do not contact me
before the next class, your exam grade will be counted as an F.
