COURSE DESCRIPTION: The MTG 2204 class has been designed to fulfill the mathematics course requirements for students who do not intend to major in any subject who requires substantial mathematics. This course introduces the student to the concepts of Angles, Basic Geometric Constructions, Introduction to Proof, Theorems involving Angles, Congruent Triangles, Basic Theorems, and Parallel Lines, CLASS DECORUM: In order to optimize your learning experience, classroom interruption must be kept to a minimum. Please make every effort to arrive on time and avoid causing an interruption if you need to leave early. PLEASE TURN YOUR CELL PHONE OFF AND AVOID USING IT DURING CLASS. ATTENDANCE: It is your responsibility to attend each lecture and keep records of assignments and other information delivered during class. Attendance will be recorded for administrative purposes only and your instructor reserves the right to count it towards your final grade. Any student who simply abandons the class without formally withdrawing is more likely to receive an “F” rather than a “W” A NOTE ON CALCULATORS: A scientific calculator is required for this course. However a graphing calculator is highly recommended for students continuing onto higher level mathematics courses. Calculators will not be shared during examinations. 1 EXAMINATION: Five exams (worth 50% of the total grade), Final (worth 30% of the total grade), and Homework (worth 20% of the total grade) will be given during the semester. All tests (exams and final exams) are mandatory. GRADING SCALE (based on total points): 100% - 90%. 89% - 80% 79% - 70% 69% - 60% 59% - 0% A Grade B Grade C Grade D Grade F Grade GRADING POLICY: Any test missed will be given a grade of 0. The schedule for the exams is given in the syllabus. NO MAKE-UPS ARE ALLOWED on any of the exams. A student must be in good academic standings and have the appropriate papers completed in order to receive an “INCOMPLETE” grade in this class. HOMEWORK Homework problems are assigned from the textbook and will be collected. All written work should be neat, organized, and should show all steps to demonstrate a clear understanding of the techniques used. EXTRA HELP: There are support labs to assist you with MTG 2204. The Math Science Study Center (Room 3326), and the Multimedia Center (Room 3319). The lab hours are as follows: Monday – Thursday: 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM Friday: 9:00 AM – 12:00 Noon 2 MTG 2204 SYLLABUS – GEOMETRY FOR TEACHERS SYLLABUS FALL 2009 -1 (AUGUST – DECEMBER 2009) *****Please Note: This schedule may be altered in class at the discretion of the instructor***** LECTURE DATES SECTION Aug31,Mon ( Day 3 ) ASSIGNMENT INTRODUCTION TO COURSE SYLLABUS Aug 24, Mon ( Day 1) Aug 26,Wed ( Day 2 ) TOPICS 1-3 Angles 1-4 Basic Geometric Constructions P. 18 – 20 Chpt. 1 - 3 Exercises: 21, 23, 26, 29, 31, 36, 39, 40 P. 26 – 27 Chpt. 1 - 4 Exercises: 4, 6, 9, 14, 15, 18. 1-5 Introduction to Proof P. 34 – 36 Chpt. 1 - 5 Exercises: 1, 3, 9, 10, 12, 16, 18 Sept 2, Wed ( Day 4 ) 1-6 Theorems Involving Supplementary Complementary, and Vertical Angles Sept 7, Mon ( Day 5 ) LABOR DAY Sept 9, Wed ( Day 6 ) EXAMINATION # 1 Sept 14, Mon ( Day 7 ) 2 -1 Sept 16, Wed ( Day 8 ) 2 -2 Sept 21, Mon ( Day 9 ) 2-3 P. 41 - 43 Chpt. 1 - 6 Exercises: 4, 6, 9, 10, 12, 14, 22, 24.
