Mrs. Covington’s Third Grade News
Week of October 26th
A note from the teacher:
We had an amazing time last Tuesday at our Fuel Up to Play
60 Hometown Huddle! We are so excited to be heading to
the Panthers’ Stadium this week to get a tour of the
stadium. We will be leaving the school by 8:15am and
returning to school around 1:00pm. Make sure your child is
dressed appropriately for the weather (dress in layers) and
is wearing shoes appropriate for lots of walking.
Due to the short week and our Field Trip, there
will be no written math and reading homework
this week. Students are still, however, expected to
read for 20 minutes each night.
Learning Targets this Week:
After this week, students will no longer be able
to make corrections to tests. This may impact
their reading and math grade. I continue to
remind them to answer all parts of the test and
read the directions carefully.
Math:
3.OA.9 I can use hundreds charts and multiplication charts to
model repeated addition or multiplication patterns.
● I will color an addition pattern on a hundreds chart or a
multiplication pattern on a multiplication table.
● I will determine the rule for an addition or multiplication pattern
based on what I colored.
● I will explain why the addition or multiplication pattern works
this way.
Math Vocabulary- factor, produce, multiply, rounding, patterns,
reasonableness
Last week we created multiplication story problems using illustrations.
Students were able to make the connections between multiplication and real
life situations. Students also went on an array scavenger hunt around the
building searching for arrays in real life. We then created multiplication
expressions using the array photos.
Literacy:
3.RI.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps,
photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of
the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).
Last week we learned about homonyms and homographs and how we can
use context clues to help us know the difference between words that are
spelled the same or sound the same. We also learned about conjunctions and
how they join words or groups of words. We had fun listening to a conjunction
song on www.Flocabulary.com. Encourage your child to identify conjunctions
in everyday conversations and print: or, and, but, for, yet, nor
