Course description:
In this course, students evaluate the concepts of going into business for themselves and
working for or operating a small business. Emphasis is on the exploration of feasible ideas of
products/services, research procedures, business financing, marketing strategies, and access
to resources for starting a small business. Students develop components of a business plan
and evaluate startup requirements. English language arts and social studies are reinforced.
Work-based learning strategies appropriate include cooperative education, entrepreneurship,
internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, and job shadowing.
Apprenticeship is not available for this course. DECA (an association for Marketing Education
students) and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competitive events, community
service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and
workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.
Course Goal:
To prepare students to meet the North Carolina State Board of Education’s Guiding Mission
“that every public school student will graduate from high school, globally competitive for work
and postsecondary education and prepared for life in the 21st century.”
Grading policy:
Tests 20%, Computer Assignments/Projects 30%, Quizzes 30%, Homework 20%
FINAL Semester Grade:
1st Nine Weeks 37.5%, 2nd Nine Weeks 37.5%, VOCATS Exam 25% (REQUIRED)
Report Cards: April 11 and June 14
Grading scale: A 93-100
Supplies: 1 8GB Flash drive.
B 85-92
C 77-84
D 70-76
F Below 70
Absences and late assignments:
Each student is responsible for completing all work missed during any absence from class.
Class Rules and Expectations:












Be Prepared, Prompt and Polite
Respect yourself, classmates and teacher
Participate in class activities and discussions
NO Food, Drinks, Cell phones, IPods/MP3 players, etc…
Computer usage sheet must be followed
NO profanity, vulgar or derogatory language
Sit in assigned seat daily and stay in your seat until the bell rings
Be Responsible---YOU are accountable for your own success!
Give BEST effort at all times
Utilize your skills…apply what you have learned
Perform at proficiency or above on the VOCATS exam
Achieve success in future endeavors
