Advanced Placement Statistics
Syllabus 2015-2016
The Course
The purpose of the AP course in statistics is to introduce students to the major
concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data.
Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes:
*Exploring Data: Observing patterns and departures from patterns
(20% - 30% of the examination)
*Planning a Study: Deciding what and how to measure
(10% - 15% of the examination)
*Anticipating Patterns: Producing models using probability theory and simulation
(20% - 30% of the examination)
*Statistical Inference: Confirming models
(30% - 40% of the examination)
The course follows the curriculum outlined by the College Board. You may want
to visit their website at apcentral.collegeboard.com/stats.
Homework/Readiness
All readings must be completed when assigned or you will be lost during our
class examples and activities. Homework will be assigned daily via our class
syllabus distributed quarterly. Due to the extensive amount of material that
must be covered before the AP Exam, students will be expected to learn and
practice some concepts outside of class. This translates into 1.0 – 1.5 hours of
homework per night. A cumulative homework grade will be given each quarter.
Grading/Responsibility
Students will be graded on the following items:
*Tests (60%)
*Quizzes/Projects (30%)
*Classwork/Homework (10%)
All assessments must be completed in pencil. (5 points) Tests will occur at least
once per chapter and will simulate the AP exam format as closely as possible.
Both test and quizzes will be timed. Extra time will not be allowed except under
special circumstances. Projects will be assigned as needed and worked on both
in class and outside of class. Most of the projects will take place after the AP
exam date of Thursday, May 12th.
Calculator Use
AP Statistics requires the use of graphing calculators. We have some TI
calculators available for use in school, but not outside of class. Students are
encouraged to purchase their own calculator. The College Board does allow
students to use the calculators on the exam.
Classroom/Responsibility/Respect
Beverages in sealed containers with secure lids are allowed in the classroom.
Snacking will only be permitted after the daily lesson is complete. Please be
mindful that many people have nut allergies and we must all be very sensitive to
their safety.
Cell Phone Policy/Responsibility
Cell phones are NOT allowed in class. All phones are to be turned off or silenced
and placed in the storage container at the beginning of each class.
Communication/Responsibility
You are expected to communicate with me via email whenever you are sick or
absent from class. Always make an attempt to keep me in the loop and always
have a plan.
Attendance/Responsibility
Planned field trips and school functions do NOT excuse you from schoolwork.
When you are aware of a planned absence, you are REQUIRED to inform me in
ADVANCE. You are also required to collect work in advance and schedule makeup quizzes/tests. All work is due upon your return to class.
The school tardy policy will also be enforced. You will be counted tardy to class
if you are not in the room when the bell rings.
Textbooks/Responsibility
I expect textbooks to be covered. This will be checked periodically.
Word of Advice:
Statistics is unlike any other math class you have taken. Your minds will be
stretched and challenged more than ever before. You will be exposed to higher
level thinking skills such as analysis and synthesis. These skills will hopefully
become routine; when they do, your possibilities will be endless!
