Mitosis and Meiosis By: Karina Garcia Vocabulary • Cell cycle: repeating set of events that make up the life of a cell. • Chromosomes: DNA and protein in a coiled, rod shaped form that occurs during cell division. • Cytokinesis: is the division of the cytoplasm of the cell • Binary fission: division of a prokaryotic cell into two offspring cells. Meiosis and mitosis • Meiosis is a process of nuclear division that reduces the number of chromosomes in a new cells to half the number in the original cell. • Mitosis is the division of the nucleus, this occurs during cell division. Mitosis is a continuous process that is divided into four phases: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Question #1 • What is the major difference between meiosis and mitosis? Question #2 • How many chromosomes do human gametes normally contain? Question #3 • During what stage of meiosis do do chromatids separate completely? Question #4 • During which stage in mitotic cell cycle is DNA replicated?
