Course Outline

Objectives
I believe that it is beneficial for students to study math for many reasons. Higher level algebra topics have
many applications in the world around us in a variety of situations and occupations, and studying mathematics
can allow students to broaden their studies in other disciplines. The study of Mathematics may keep the doors
open to a variety of educational and career opportunities. The class is also a major step in meeting the
Washington State graduation requirements.

Rules : All rules can be summarized by Respect.

Homework
Homework is critical to student learning and their grade. Homework is given almost every day in class.
Students who do not do homework will have a very difficult time passing this class. Homework is periodically
collected and is checked for completion. However, after a chapter/module test, all homework from that
chapter/module is ½ credit.
Tests
Tests generally occur at the end of a chapter and are usually done on an individual basis. Occasionally
students are allowed a small amount of notes to use on the test. Because of their nature, and higher overall
percentage, tests have a large impact on a grade. Students are allowed two retakes during each semester.
Retakes of tests can be done for most tests except the final. The final score is calculated by a weighted average
((3Higher+Lower)/4). Prior to taking a retake a student must make an effort to relearn the material. Criteria for
doing this will be discussed in class. If a student misses the original test; the retake becomes the only
opportunity for the student.
Quizzes
Periodically there will be quizzes in this class. Quizzes generally cover the most recent material but can
cover any material that a student can reasonably be expected to know. Missed quizzes cannot be made up,
missed quizzes a score of excused.
Tardies
If you are not in the room when the bell rings, or if you leave before the bell, you are tardy. At the end of
each semester students will lose points from the rule grade for each tardy they accumulate.
Food and Drink
There is no food or drink in this room; students lose points from the rule grade violating this rule.
Inappropriate Language
Students who use inappropriate language or making derogatory comments may loose points from the Rule
Grade, usually warnings are given; students lose points from the rule grade violating this rule.
Plagiarism
Students are expected to do their own work on homework, tests and quizzes. If a student is found copying
another student’s assignment, or turning in an assignment that belongs to another student; both students will
receive zeros on the assignment, provided both had knowledge of what was occurring, and appropriate
discipline may be taken, as outlined in CHS discipline.
Calculators
Students are encouraged to have, and use, calculators during this course, most 4 function calculators are fine
but a scientific calculator would be better.
There may occasionally be times in this class when calculators are not allowed.
Cell Phones
Cell phones are to be turned off, and kept out of sight during class time, unless permission is given to use
them. Students who violate this rule by using them for non-academic reasons may lose their phones, and lose
points from the rule grade. If a cell phone is taken from a student, they are turned into the office and can be
picked up at the end of the school day.
Extra Help
The best time to get extra help from me is in the mornings, or the first half hour after school ends. If you
need to meet at a different time please make arrangements with the teacher. Tutoring is often available in the
math department and frequently with peer tutors in the library.
