QUARTER ONE EDITING CHECKLIST FOR EXPOSITORY ESSAY
[include this checklist when packaging your expository essay for turn in]
___ I have edited out the pronoun “I” in my formal writing.
___ I have edited out “I’m going to tell you,” “I think,” “My paper is about,” and similar
statements. This is first draft writing, not final writing for a formal essay.
___ My thesis statement is the last sentence is the first paragraph. If the thesis statement stood
alone, anyone who read it would know what my essay is about.
___ I’ve replaced vague pronouns with specific words.
Remember the “Man’s Best Friend Essay;” the writer used at least six other words besides
“dog.” Practice this in your writing!!
__ I’ve used commas correctly following the rules on page 20 and 21 of my spiral notebook.
__ Numbers at the beginning of sentences are spelled out.
__ I do not have misspelled words in my final copy.
___ I do not use “thing” and “stuff” or other vague pronouns. I’ve focused on broadening my
vocabulary to use more specific and a variety of nouns.
___ In my draft, a peer has circled words that are repeated a lot. I have thoughtfully figured out
how to change the overuse issue.
___ I use a variety of short and long sentence throughout my essay.
___ I use a variety of short and long sentences throughout my essay.
