Read each description. Decide which career category each
production career should go under. Working in groups of 2-3,
make a poster with the following 4 titles and put each career
under the correct category: A. Apparel Design B. Apparel

Fashion Designer – a person who designs and sets the tone of a clothing line using
silhouette, line, color, and textile choices
Sketcher – a person who provides drawings of ideas that fashion designers have
draped onto mannequins using fabric
Sample Maker – a person who sews sample garment designs together to represent
what the fashion designer created
Marker Maker – a person who designs the fabric layout of pattern pieces for a particular
design based on available sizes
Pattern Maker- a person who creates a pattern for the apparel design from a fashion
designer
Pattern Grader – a person who uses a computer to grade an apparel pattern for
different sizes, cutting instructions and fabric amounts
Cutter – a person who cuts out garment parts from fabric using patterns
Sewing Machine Operator – a person who sews apparel on fast industrial sewing
machines
Finisher – a person who does any required hand-sewing work on better quality, higherpriced apparel to complete a more finished appearance
Inspector – a person who removes all loose and unnecessary threads and removes lint,
and checks apparel for quality
Costing Engineer – a person who determines the overall price to produce each apparel
item
Showroom Salesperson – a person who works in the apparel manufacturer’s showroom
showing apparel designs to potential buyers

Outside Sales Representative – a person who works outside of the apparel
manufacturer’s showroom showing apparel designs to potential buyers
Market Researcher – a person who researches the apparel market for new buying
trends and reports back to the apparel manufacturing company concerning what, where
and why consumers are purchasing
Textile Chemist – a person with a chemistry background who works to develop new
manufactured fibers and/or blend different fibers together to create new textile effects
Textile Designer- a person who artistically creates textile patterns that can be
incorporated into fabric design
