SCOS Objectives….in REAL words you can understand 11th grade English North Iredell High School Below are the objectives that we will spend our year focusing on to ensure that your student will find success in English class. 1.02 You will read many texts and give a personal response to these texts. 1.03 You will read, listen to and view expressive texts so that you can respond to these texts by drawing conclusions, establishing relationships to other works, and identifying historical or cultural influences on the texts. 2.01 You will be able to research and discuss events in US history as they relate to US literature. 3.02 You will be able to select an issue or theme and argue for or against it based on the different viewpoints of American literature. 3.04 You are going to read both print and non-print texts that argue a point and demonstrate your comprehension of these texts by using quotations as well as your own words to make connections between works, evaluate the author’s techniques, and to identify main ideas. 4.01 You will use literary elements (such as plot, point of view, characterization) and figures of speech (such as personification and alliteration) to interpret meaning of a text. 5.01 You will study literary movements of United States and demonstrate your understanding why pieces of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry fit into these movements. 5.02 You will read many United States authors and compare their works to their own experiences. 6.01 You will learn vocabulary that will better prepare you for the SAT, as well as to use more context clues to interpret new words as well as to enhance your own writing skills. 6.02 You will proofread and edit your own writing.
