Prerequisite: Parenting and Child Development Other Requirements: At least 16 years old and transportation to internship site. Course Description: This course is intended to prepare students to work with children ages 6 weeks through age 8. Emphasis is placed on enhancing the development of young children while providing early education and care. Topics include: Stages of development, Theories of Development, Healthy environments, Safety, Encouraging positive behavior, Creating appropriate activities for young children, Observation techniques and Creative classroom environments. Internship Component: The ECE1 internship (approx. 132 hours) is intended to provide students with authentic work experience in a variety of early childhood settings. This valuable experience allows students to have hands-on knowledge of what it means to teach and/or care for young children. Appropriate sites include: Child Care Centers, Tutoring Programs, Elementary/Secondary Schools and Private Preschool Programs. (February-May: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 8-11:00). Students are expected to sign in/out daily to receive credit for internship hours. Students who fail to text Ms. Godby if they are absent from internship will receive ONE Warning and the 2nd time students will be assigned an ASD. Daily Class (Monday/Friday) Requirements: 2” 3 ring binder with 5 dividers (Feb-May) Art supplies as needed Charged Macbook 3 ring plastic folder Class Norms: Be respectful of other opinions. Participate in discussions. Be on time, every day. Complete Internship Activities with Fidelity. Do what ‘s right when no one is looking. Be a positive influence in the life of a child. LNHS Tardy Policy: Tracked by individual teachers. 1st tardy: Warning 2nd tardy: Warning 3rd tardy: 1 after school detention and parent contact. 4th tardy and beyond: Saturday School Parents should be contacted for every third tardy (3, 6, 9, etc.) Driving privileges will be removed for students who are tardy to first block. LNHS Tardy Policy continued: Students who drive to school will lose their driving privileges for: 4rd tardy = 3 days driving privileges removed by administrator 7th tardy = 5 days driving privileges removed by administrator Grading: Internship Activities and Tests Observations/Projects/Quiz’s = 60% = 40% Cell Phone Policy during Internship time: Students may not have their cell phone with them during internship time. You may store it in the classroom along with you keys in an appropriate place. If you need to check for messages you may do so after asking the classroom teacher for permission. Confidentiality Agreement: Students are required to sign a confidentiality agreement to protect the privacy of the students they work with while at the internship site.
