• Main function:
–Absorb water & nutrients
Transport them to the above ground
plant
–Anchor the plant in the ground
–Some store energy as carbohydrates

• Primary root – first part to emerge out of a
seed
• Secondary root – arises from the primary
root
– Seedlings transplant best when they have
secondary roots already growing

hairs – tiny hairs that absorb most of the
water for the plant (increase surface area

•Root cap-tip where growth
occurs. It pushes through
hard soil or around a rock

A. Much like those of stems
with phloem, cambium, and
xylem layers.
B. Phloem- the outer layer;
carries food down the root

C. Xylem- the inner
layer; carries water and
minerals up to the stem.

A.Fibrous- many branched
shallow roots; are easier to
transplant. Roots are
shallow.

B. Tap- long root with few
branched ones; are more
difficult to transplant.
Examples: Carrots,
Walnut trees, dandelions
