Art 2 is a year long, intermediate level studio course designed to help you develop studio thinking skills and expand skills, processes and techniques explored in Art 1, through challenging projects and the artistic mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking, mixedmedia, bookmaking, sculpture, ceramics and graphic design/technology. You will be guided and challenged to create meaningful pieces of art by developing your personal voice through research and understanding of traditional and contemporary artists, culture and history, and in depth study and application of the elements of art and principles of design. Presentation/Class Collaboration Additionally, you will be working more independently (than in Art 1), and make choices for desired project and assignment outcomes. Studio Process and Production What will I Iearn? As a result of this class, you’ll Develop your creativity/imagination, and visual processing skills. Use the elements and principles of design in creating artwork. Develop a sense of artistic composition & space. Use influences of traditional and contemporary, art history, artists and culture in own work. Apply problem-solving abilities and build upon previous knowledge. Use the language of art in verbal and written communication. Collaborate with peers by sharing ideas & feedback. Reflect upon and evaluate your artwork & artwork of others constructively. Develop an awareness of the ethical and social implications of art and technology. Formal visual presentations (video (clips), apps, power points/active studio and other), collaborative activities and class discussions are given to introduce visual concepts, processes and artists relevant to project challenges. Demonstration Hands on instruction and demonstration of processes and techniques are introduced and conducted in class. Specific use of tools and equipment is demonstrated to you to enable you to acquire necessary skills to complete work safely and competently. Studio is time in which you work in class on assigned art challenges to allow hands on instruction, monitoring, on going feedback of your work while in progress. Critique You will participate in guided verbal and written reflection and evaluation of your own progress through individual, peer and group discussion and critique. Providing feedback is an essential tool to support your learning and contribute to the learning of others. Sketchbook and Portfolio You will create a visual sketchbook that will serve to record and experiment with new ideas and observations. You will build a digital portfolio of completed art challenges. Studio Supplies Needed Sketchbook 8 1/2” x 11” or 9” x 12” Pencil/Eraser School Agenda Sketchbook/Daily classwork 10-20 points What Kind of Homework Will There Be? Homework may be in the form of brainstorming, research, materials collection, and/or weekly sketchbook assignments. How will my work be assessed/ graded? A typical quarter will consist of about three projects. Success in this class is dependent on participation and motivation. Work will be assessed using both formative and summative evaluation. The process (how will I get there?) is as important as the product (end result- artwork). Rubrics Goals and objectives of each assignment will be given in a handout with a rubric at the outset of each project. Clear and concise directions and guidance will be given for optima success of each student’s project. Rubrics reflecting the quality of the work will consist of the following criteria: Concept/Content Design/Composition Creativity/Originality/Experimentation Craftsmanship/Technique Presentation/Critique Rubrics reflecting the process of the work will consist of completion of steps of project: Accessing, acquiring information Processing Info/Idea Generation Experimentation/Exploration Producing the Art Challenge Self-reflection and Assessment Grades Grades will be reported in Phoenix following the LCPS grading scale and policy and will reflect individual achievement: Studio Projects 50-100 points Warm ups &Exit Tickets 1-4 points Critiques 10-25 points All work must be signed and dated before turning in. No signature and date = no credit. What Additional Essential Skills will Be Taught or Assessed? Since this class is studio-based, the following skills will be taught implicitly (though not always explicitly) and sometimes evaluated over the course of the year: reading and comprehending, writing clearly and accurately, listening actively and speaking clearly, applying mathematics, thinking critically, personal management, and teamwork, using technology, civic and community engagement, and global literacy. Copyright and Originality Students are expected to create their own, original artwork in which their own personal voice is clearly evident. What do I do if my work is Incomplete? Turn in work when due, even if unfinished. Credit will be given for work completed. This grade will stand until you finish the work and turn in the assignment again to be re-evaluated and a new grade issued. Students will be given an opportunity to redo one assignment per quarter to show improved mastery. Late work will be assessed as follows: 1 – 5 school days, assessed grade minus 10 pts; 6 – 10 school days, assessed grade minus 20 pts. Assignments, due dates and resources will be posted on my Web page under Art 2. What do I do if I am absent? If you are absent, make sure that you obtain class notes and complete missed bell ringers, class activities, and studio processes. If you are absent form the start to end of a project, you may be given alternate work to do. What do I do if I need extra help? Just ASK.
