All important information, including college and scholarship information will be
communicated to you throughout the year via this newsletter. If you want more
information than what is listed here in the newsletter, you are to come to
Guidance and see Mrs. Pulyer for more details.

UNC Charlotte’s Explore | Open House!
Students and their families will discover all we have to offer as they take a
campus tour, tour residence halls, meet faculty from the academic departments,
talk with current students, and attend a variety of information sessions about
academic programs, support services and student life.
This program is held four Saturdays a year, from 9:00am-2:00pm. Upcoming
Explore UNC Charlotte dates for the 2012-2013 academic year are:

Students can make a reservation for Explore | Open House online by creating a
Future 49er Web account.
In addition to presentations by several colleges, information sessions offered at
Explore | Open House include:

If students are unable to attend UNC Charlotte’s Explore | Open House, you
may remind them that they can still visit our campus for campus tours and
information sessions, offered Monday through Friday at 1:30pm and Saturdays at
9:30am or 10:15am. Registration is required for campus tours and space is
limited. Students can register online via their Future 49er Web portal.

Need Financial Aid for College? FAFSA Day is a free service provided by College
Foundation of North Carolina, the North Carolina Association of Student
Financial Aid Administrators, and the State Employees’ Credit Union. Get
FREE help from financial specialists and college aid professionals to complete
and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically.
9 a.m. to 12 noon (Times may vary, so check the CFNC website.)

Please give Mrs. Pulyer ten (10) working days to process the guidance
counselor portion of your college applications. Any application with a
specific deadline must be turned in ten (10) working days prior to the
deadline. Guidance cannot accept responsibility for late applications.
If your application contains a post card to be returned to you, you are
responsible for the postage.
DO NOT leave applications or any part of an application on Mrs.
Pulyer’s desk. You can leave it in the box on her door.
No fee will be charged for transcripts sent to colleges and/or
prospective employers.
To have transcripts sent, all seniors must complete a transcript request
form (white sheet). This form is on the school website or you can come
in and see Mrs. Farley (Guidance Secretary) for one.
If the college application asks for your counselor’s email address,
please list Mrs. Pulyer’s - theresa_pulyer@iss.k12.nc.us - to ensure that
any college requests are sent to the right place. Guidance cannot
accept responsibility for any requests that are not sent directly to Mrs.
Pulyer.
Are you an athlete hoping to receive an athletic
scholarship to college????
Remember, you must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse @
www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. The Clearinghouse evaluates your academic record
to determine if you are eligible to participate at a Division I or II college as a
freshmen student-athlete. Now is the time to register. Cost to register:
$75. If you were eligible to use an SAT or ACT waiver, you are also eligible for a
Clearinghouse waiver. See Coach Weycker for more information.

Original essay on the Political courage of a US elected official. For contest

Gates Millennium Scholars Program For outstanding students who have
significant financial need and demonstrated leadership skills. Students must be
African American, American/ Indian/ Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander or

The North Carolina Hispanic College Fund
Criteria: This scholarship program recognizes the academic achievements and
leadership qualities of Hispanic high school seniors. Applicants must plan to
attend a college/university in the fall of 2013. Must provide official transcript

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation for Minority Interests in Media
This work/study program is open to all minority students with a cumulative
grade point average of 3.0 or better and an interest in the media industry.
Students interested in applying for an Emma L. Bowen internship should visit

Elks National Foundation
Legacy Awards $4,000 ($1,000 year for four years) merit-based scholarships
for children and grandchildren of Elks who are members in good standing.

The GAR College Scholarships
Six high school seniors will receive college scholarships up to $12,500 per year to
attend any nationally accredited four-year college for full time study.
The scholarship is open to all high school seniors who:
 have shown high academic achievement (3.5 + GPA)
 have financial need
 are dependent children of employees who have, or had a career in the
financial services industry

National Co-op Scholarship Program:
To qualify for this scholarship, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or
higher and must complete all required admissions application materials and be
accepted for the 2013-2014 academic year at one of the National Commission
Partner Institutes on the following list: Johnson & Wales, Drexel University,
Kettering University, Pace University, Rochester Institute of Technology,
University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, or Wentworth Institute of
Technology.

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship
Through its Education and Leadership Development Program, the Jackie
Robinson Foundation provides scholarships of up to $24,000/four years to
minority high school students showing leadership potential and demonstrating
financial need to attend an accredited 4-year college or university of their choice.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship, an applicant must:
● Be a graduating, minority high school senior;
● Plan to attend an accredited and approved four–year institution within the
United States;
● Show leadership potential;
● Demonstrate a dedication to community service;
● Present evidence of financial need;
● Be a United States citizen;
● A minimum SAT score of 1,000 combined on the math and critical reading
sections or a composite ACT score of 22; and
● Does not possess a degree from a 2 or 4–year College when applying for
the scholarship.
Application Components
The required components of the Jackie Robinson Foundation application are:
● A completed and submitted online application;
● One (1) letter of recommendation submitted online only
SAT or ACT scores sent to the Foundation directly from the testing
agencies. The Foundation’s college codes are: SAT 4248/ACT: 6570.
You will need to have a copy of your SAT or ACT scores and your latest high
school transcript in order to complete the questions on the online application.
Mailing Materials
We will not accept the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship application or
supporting documents via mail, email or fax. Applications and letters of
recommendation will only be accepted via our online application program.

MICHAEL A. DeMAYO SCHOLARSHIP:
For the ninth consecutive year, the Law Office of Michael A DeMayo is pleased to
offer local seniors an opportunity to win scholarships to help further their
education. They will be awarding ten (15) $2,500 scholarships to seniors who are
chosen by the committee as having submitted the best presentation on a preselected topic and who will attend a four-year institution of higher learning.
Qualifications:
Must have applied for acceptance for a full-time enrollment at a four-year school
-A type written application
-A presentation (video/power point/brochure/website/speech) that encourages
fellow teens to abstain from underage drinking and/or highlights the dangers of
drinking and driving
-High school transcript

NAVY ROTC SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is for 4 years worth up to
$180,000 (full tuition, textbooks, lab/incidental fees, uniform, living allowance
of $250 per month, increases $50 each academic school year, and a summer
training stipend) for your choice of bachelor’s degree majors. The service options
are for: Navy or Navy Nurse (nurses compete only with other Nurse applicants).

NC REACH PROGRAM FOR NC ADOPTEES AND FORMER FOSTER
YOUTH: A scholarship program has been created to benefit students who were
in public foster care. Eligible students are those who have completed their
secondary education and who were in NC DSS foster care on their 18th birthday,
OR who were adopted from North Carolina public foster care on or after their
12th birthday. For more information and an application visit their website at

age of 16 or who were in foster care on or after their 17th birthday are eligible for

VETERANS SCHOLARSHIP: Children of disabled, deceased, combat, or
POW/MIA war veterans may be eligible for scholarships. If your veteran parent
was a resident of North Carolina when he/she entered military service OR if you

from the State of NC to attend one of the universities, community colleges or

HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND
College bound students of all levels who are US citizens or legal permanent
residents. There are close to 150 HSF scholarship programs including the Gates
Millennium Scholars Program. Scholarship amounts range from $1,000 to
$15,000.

3.0-3.5 GPA
Be a US citizen or an eligible non-citizen
Have plans to enroll FULL TIME in a degree seeking program at a two or four
year US accredited institution in the US, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, or Guam
