Mrs. Economou's Weekly Newsletter Skills & Strategies for Sept. 2nd -Sept. 5th Week #2 is Short & Sweet Reading Awards: Exceptional Manners Award : Wesley SACK Award (Simple Acts of Care and Kindness): Adam Terrific Kid: Braxton Character Traits Read different stories and identify the different character traits of the main character in the stories. Create a list of character traits to use when doing character analysis. Compare & Contrast different characters' traits. Summarizing - practice brainstorming key words from the story, and then using them in a concise summary. Math Place Value & Number Forms (standard, expanded, picture with base ten blocks and word form) to millions. Comparing and Ordering Numbers as high as hundred thousands and as small as hundredths. Rounding Numbers from hundred thousands to hundredths. Science Motion, Forces, and Energy We will begin reading and talking about what makes things move, what affects motion, and what is energy. Volunteers: We now have 2 classroom moms: Dana Darling (Wesley's) & Tonnya Brady (Shayla's). Many of you volunteered and I appreciate the offers. Project reminder: Our first project, due Sept. 8th, involves a bit of research, reading, thinking, writing and Social Studies We will continue to discuss the landforms we learned last presenting. The students week & decide which ones are in NC. Review latitude & brought home a flyer explaining longitude. how to write a "bio poem" about someone they admire. Spelling Our spelling quiz is Thursday this week. Everyone had the same list the first week of school, but based on a spelling pretest the students took, we will now have several spelling groups. Some students need to learn prefixes and suffixes, others need to learn spelling rules, such as when to change a "y" to an "i". Some students will learn Latin and Greek root words. Here are the words for our quiz Thursday: admire magnet contest method finger custom rally soccer engine gutter sudden accident mitten intend fabric flatten reseal mammal happen cannon Challenge Words: (Bonus words for extra credit!) dungeon, magnify, festival, injury & thunderstorm Journal reminder: Students are required to reflect on their 20 - 30 minutes of reading each night, and write a journal entry.
