Success on the Reading SOL You Can Do It! READ • Read the entire passage first! • Then read the questions and go back and reread as necessary. Look for Key Words • Look at the question and pick out the key words then look for those words in the passage. • Example: In the Notice determine which requirements the applicant must have. • You will look for Notice and requirements in the passage. Remember the Context Clues to define the word • Synonym – the sentence provides a synonym(word that means the same) • Antonym – the sentence or passage provides a word that means the opposite • Definition given – the sentence provides the definition. • Example – the sentence provides examples. • Explanation – the passage gives an example ELL Students -Use Your Dictionary • ELL students, who can use both their language dictionary and the English dictionary, use them! • If, after looking the word up in the language dictionary, you still do not understand the word, then look it up in the English dictionary. • Use the context clues from the sentence as well. Basic Terms • Conflict – the main problem • Point of View – who is telling the story – First person = I – Third person limited = telling one person’s story – Third person omniscient = all character’s stories More Terms • Simile – comparison using like or as • The sky is as blue as a robin’s egg. • Personification – giving nonhuman things human characteristics • The sky exhaled gasps of hot air all over the city. Take Your Time • You have all day to take the test. • Do not GUESS! There is always a way to figure out the answer. Look for context clues. • Don’t be lazy—you have to read to answer the questions!
