Bill of Rights How many amendments are in the Bill of Rights? • 10 Amendment I • Congress cannot make a law prohibiting the freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition. Amendment II • People have the right to bear arms or own guns. Amendment III • No soldier shall be quartered in any house without the consent of the owner in times of peace. Amendment IV • Persons are protected against unreasonable searches and seizures. Amendment V • No person shall be tried for the same offense twice and has the right to remain silent so as to not incriminate themself. A person cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation. • Amendment VI • The accused person in a crime shall have the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury. The person also has to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation, be allowed to confront witnesses against him, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense. • Amendment VII • In civil lawsuits, where the value in controversy exceeds twenty dollars, a person has the right to a jury trial. • Amendment VIII • Excessive bail or fines are not allowed, neither is cruel and unusual punishments. Amendment IX • People have other rights that go beyond just what is listed. • Amendment X • The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states or to the people.
