Dear RVHS Parents and Guardians,
Riverside High School is pleased to share with you our vocabulary enhancement program through Sadlier-Oxford publishing
company (http://www.sadlier.com). This successful national program increases vocabulary development and critical thinking
skills through academic and domain-specific content in context. Juniors at other LCPS schools, such as Heritage and
Tuscarora Highs, have testified that the vocabulary studied in their texts have appeared on the SAT. Other students, even
those who initially resisted the vocabulary program, have worked diligently because of the program’s engaging in-hand and
on-line components. The entire workbook is designed to benefit both SOL and SAT preparatory work but many of the words
contained in Sadlier-Oxford also appear in the literary selections analyzed throughout the English curriculum.
The text contains 15 units with the following: vocabulary words and definitions, exercises using the words in context, and
practice using synonyms and antonyms. In addition to the fifteen units, there are five review units. Students use their books
in class, write in them, and take them home to study. Each student will be asked to purchase a copy of the consumable
vocabulary book for $12.00. However, RVHS cannot require all students to purchase this vocabulary workbook and thus
provisions will be made for students who are unable to buy a personal copy.
Since the teachers desire to begin the program during the first quarter, we ask that you send the cash or check made out to
RVHS with your child and his or her English teacher by September 18th. (If you choose to write a check, please write your
student’s name on the memo line.) If you are unable to participate in the purchase of this item, please note this in the
information below.
