Miss Jean, a travel agent at AAA, is hosting a contest for middle school students to
design a poster to promote eco-tourism around the United States. You and your
teammates will randomly draw one of the eight geographic regions out of a hat. Your
team goal is to persuade tourists to plan a vacation/trip to the region you got.
Miss Jean will be judging the competition and will choose a first, second, and third
place poster that will be displayed through photos online. To win the contest, you not
only need to follow the rubric below (as this is also a graded assignment for Miss O. and
Mrs. Sassak’s classes), but your poster must be the VERY BEST!
RUBRIC Information that must be included on you poster:
1.
2.
3.
4.
The name of the region – 5 points
The location of the region – 5 points
Some of the states that are part of the region (at least 3) – 5 points
Features of the region (you may use internet pictures if you like – BUT do NOT
expect to print them out during class time! No color ink here. Also magazine
pictures are allowed)
a. Different animals of the region –minimum 3
b. Physical features (describe what the land looks like)– minimum 3
c. Places of interest –natural places of attractions/parks/monuments/etc. – at least
3
Total is 15 points for features
5. BE CREATIVE and Color is a must! – 5 points
6. Be PERSUASIVE – you must convince tourists that your region is the BEST using
persuasive language, not just facts!! For example:
WRONG/BORING: The Rocky Mountains have bald eagles and geysers.
CORRECT/EXCITING: Have you ever wanted to see a bald eagle soar above the
clouds? Have you ever wondered what the spray of a spouting 140 foot geyser felt
like on a cool day? You can experience both by visiting Yellowstone National Park in
the glorious Rocky Mountains region!
Why your region is the best! – 15 points
TOTAL = 50 points
