Clauses
 An __INDEPENDENT CLAUSE_________ is a clause that can stand on its own as a sentence.

It contains a __SUBJECT_______ and a PREDICATE______________________________.

Ex: Max went to the store.
 A __DEPENDENT CLAUSE_____ is a clause that can NOT stand on its own as a sentence.

It still contains a subject, a predicate, but it also has _SUBORDINATING _ conjunction



Dependent clauses begin with signal words. Write down the “AAAWWUBBIS” below
AFTER, ALTHOUGH, AS, WHEN, WHILE, UNTIL, BECAUSE, BEFORE, IF, SINCE
Sentence Fragment
 A _FRAGMENT __is an incomplete sentence. It is not a complete thought, and it cannot stand on
its own.
 Three types of fragments:

Missing a _SUBJECT______________ : Went to the store

Missing a _PREDICATE______________________: The kid with the Iron Man shoes

A dependent CLAUSE___: While the kid with the Iron Man shoes went to the store
Run-on Sentence
 A ___RUN-ON_____ sentence is when two or more sentences are written as one.

Max went to the store today, he bought milk for his mother.
 Identifying Run-ons
1. Two sentences with no punctuation between them. This is called a ___FUSED
SENTENCE___

Max went to the store today he bought milk for his mother.
2. Two sentences only separated by a comma. This is called a __COMMA SPLICE_____

Max went to the store today, he bought milk for his mother.
3. Two sentences with no comma before the _COORDINATING _ conjunction (FANBOYS).

Max went to the store today and he bought milk for his mother.
3 ways to correct run-on sentences:
1. Make the run-on into 2 sentences separated by _A PERIOD_________.

Max went to the store today. He bought milk for his mother.
2. Insert a _COMMA___ and a conjunction.

Max went to the store today, and he bought milk for his mother.
3. Separate the sentences with a __SEMI-COLON________.

Max went to the store today; he bought milk for his mother.
Compound Sentence
 A compound sentence has __TWO__ independent clauses combined by either:
 A semi colon OR a _COMMA__ AND a _COORDINATING__ conjunction (FANBOYS)
