STATESVILLE HIGH BAND
STUDENT/PARENT HANDBOOK
BAND—IT IS NOT AN ACTIVITY,
IT IS A WAY OF LIFE!!!!
I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No
matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.
Billy Joel
Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety
to life and to everything.
Plato
Without music, life would be a mistake.
Friedrich Nietzsche
There are many things to do in life,
The choices are quite grand.
But only a musician
Knows how it feels to be in a band.
To share a magical language and create a beautiful sound.
The Chance to be an artist in a special way, I’ve found.
My Instrument is like a friend
Eager to come out and play.
The more time I spend practicing, the better I can say
Those inner thoughts which fill my mind.
Beyond the words I speak
Allow me to express myself in a way that’s quite unique.
Each day I spend in band
I start to realize
Everything is possible
When seen through music’s eyes.
Knowing that bit of wisdom
I now will take a stand,
And pledge myself to excellence
By playing in the band.

*ALL PERCUSSIONISTS IN THE DRUM LINE CLASS IN THE FALL OR CONCERT/SYMPHONIC BANDS IN THE SPRING WILL BE REQUIRED
TO PURCHASE THEIR OWN STICKS/MALLETS. FOR THE DRUM LINE CLASS, ANY HEADS ON YOUR MARCHING EQUIPMENT THAT ARE
NEW WHEN YOU GET THE EQUIPMENT, WILL BE REPLACED ONCE FOR NO COST TO YOU. AFTER THAT, YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE
FOR PURCHASING YOUR OWN REPLACEMENT HEADS.
6. Music Department Instruments and Equipment
Instruments
It is recommended that students who play flute, clarinet, alto / tenor saxophone and trumpets provided their own instrument. If you do not
currently own your own instrument, you will need to rent one from your local music center. Many of the school owned instruments have been
repaired multiple times and are not the best instruments.
The Statesville High School Instrumental Music Department owns many instruments that are loaned to students each year. It is the
responsibility of each student to take care of this band owned instrument. Before a school owned instrument is checked out, a loan agreement
must be completed and signed by the student and parent. Each instrument loaned must be returned in the same condition that it is checked
out with reasonable wear acceptable. All repairs to the instrument will be the responsibility of the student/parent/guardian. There will be a
fee for acceptable use of a school owned instrument.
Care of equipment and Band room
It is the responsibility of each music student to demonstrate the utmost care for all band equipment, instruments, music stands, folders,
instrument cabinets and cages, uniforms, etc. The band room, practice room and closets are not to be used for personal storage or for waste
materials. Students leaving personal items in the band room will do so at their own risk. Storage lockers/cages are available in the band
room on a first come, first serve basis and must be kept neat and orderly. The instruments should also be kept in their cases to protect them
from being broken or dented. Failure to take care of equipment and band room may result in the loss of instrument/ equipment use
privilege. We cannot make great music if we do not have good working instruments/equipment. You may bring a lock for your
instrument cage. I must, however, be a combination lock and the band director MUST have the combination
7. Policies
Attendance
Scheduled performances and rehearsals—Students are required to attend all scheduled performances and rehearsals.. Students will be
excused for personal illness, death in the family, ”once in a lifetime event”, school related activity such as PSAT, College Board, ACT, academic
competitions or trips. Even if it is an excused absence, student will be required to complete a make up assignment (either written,
performance or both as determined by the director) within 5 days of the missed performance. Failure to do so will result in a “0” for that
performance.
Students may be asked to sit out of a performance for any of the following reasons:
1. Wearing the uniform in an inappropriate manner (not complete/fully dressed)
2. The uniform looks unkempt, stained, or wrinkled due to poor care
3. Shoes are not properly cleaned, or are not official band shoes.
4. Long hair is not in a ponytail in the hat.
5. Failure to remove all visible jewelry.
6. Do not know their music or drill
7. Cannot stay in step for extended periods of time.
8. Behavior infractions, write ups, suspensions—see information below
9. Do not have their instruments
10. Do not have all of the items they need to perform
11. Failure to complete and return medical forms and information.
12. Is unprepared due to an extended absence
13. Failure to return signed student contract
14. Lack of preparation of the required material/drill/music to perform following a missed rehearsal
15. Other to be determined by the director and SHS administration. Parents will be informed.
Missing two performances (unexcused) in a given 9 week period may result in dismissal from the marching band / concert band.
Work is not an excused absence since you are being provided with a schedule prior to any required activity. Most jobs will work with students
IF you act responsibly and inform them ahead of time.
In the event a change is made in a scheduled performance or rehearsal, students are encouraged to make every effort possible to adapt to that
change. If ample notice of a change is not possible, the policy on absences will be adjusted accordingly.
There is no way to actually make up a missed performance. If you miss a performance for any reason, you must play or make a video
recording of yourself playing all the music for that performance and return said recording to the band director within two days of the
missed performance. The highest grade(s) you will receive will be 80% because band is a performance based class and one person
missing affects the entire group.
Behavior Policy
Band members are expected to follow all Statesville High School and Iredell Statesville Schools policies regarding appropriate student
behavior. Violation of the following will be handled through existing school policy: Personal relationships, class cut, destruction of school
property, disrespect, drugs, fighting, gambling, weapons, profanity, sexual harassment, smoking, smokeless tobacco, vapes, breaking and
entering and stealing. Inability to follow the classroom norms which are based on the class mission statement will be addressed by the
band director. Chronic minor behavior as well as major behavior infractions as defined by school board policy will be addressed by
band director and SHS Administration. Administration will consider mitigating circumstances when determining consequences.
If the student is chronically not in their seat and fully prepared for class when rehearsal begins, and if they do not have a note as to their
tardiness, Student will have to write a paper. The paper must be 1 page, front and back, hand written, legible and grammatically correct. The
topic of the paper is “ How does a band student’s lack of preparation and commitment to the band program affect not only
themselves, but the entire band”. The paper is due within 2 days after the infraction.
If a student is not participating due to illness, broken instrument, lack of reed, mouthpiece or stick/mallets, or simply choose not to
participate, they have to write a paper outlining everything musically that is addressed during class that day. The paper must be turned in at
the end of the class.
Social Media sites will be monitored. The students will be required to adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy set by ISS Board policy.
Use of Personal Electronic Devices
Personal Electronic Devices (cell phones, iPods, tablets, and other handheld devices) that are available in today’s society for communication
and entertainments will not be allowed during band rehearsals and performances unless that is a portion of the band director’s lesson plans
for that day, as they can be a HUGE distraction. We would hope that these would not be used in a derogatory manner with regard to any
person, group or situation. If seen, you will be asked to put them away first. If the student refuses to follow the teacher directive, the device
could be confiscated.
You may use your phone in class only if you are utilizing a tuner app, a metronome app or a piano keyboard app.
Travel/Transportation
All Students are REQUIRED to travel with the band to all activities. In the event a parent finds it necessary to drive a student to or from a
band activity (where group transportation is provided), the following policy will apply:
1. Prior written notification must be received and approved by the Director or chaperone on their bus.
2. Students will only be permitted to leave with their parents or an adult authorized by the parents as approved by the Director.
3. Students will not be permitted to leave with boy or girl friends, classmates, etc.
Behavior/missed rehearsal - performance rules.
1. Disrespect for section, band, director or administration could result in student being benched for the next performance.
2. Use of inappropriate language (cursing/swearing), bullying other students will result in student being benched for at least the next
performance.
3. Inappropriate dress or being improperly prepared attire wise for a performance could result in student being benched for the
immediate performance.
4. Inability to follow directions or arguing with the directions being given could result in student being benched for the immediate
performance.
5. Missed class rehearsals or after school rehearsals will result in a zero grade. Student may read an article and write a summary for a
maximum grade of 80, if the summary is written correctly.
6. Missed performances, regardless of reason or being benched, will result in a zero grade. Student may perform all music played at
the performance in front of the band class or make a video recording for a maximum grade of 80. Game and parade performances are
counted 3 times. Concert performances count 4 times.
7. Being written up by any teacher 2 or more times or, being written up by the band director, or being given OSS for
ANY reason will result in your being removed/failing Marching band and will be benched until the end of the
season. You will not be afforded the opportunity to participate in the SHS Band Program in any and all following
semesters.
Please be aware of these rules...........
Student Contract
Before a student can participate in rehearsals, they must have a completed, signed student contract on file. It is important to know that both
parents and students understand the rules and consequences in this handbook. Until the contract is signed, the student will not be allowed to
participate in any performances
Medical Form
Band, Especially Marching Band, is an extremely physical activity. Students are strongly encouraged to have a physical examination before
participating. Per Iredell Statesville School Board Policy, all students must have a completed medical /emergency release form on file before
they will be permitted on band trips and performances. Students with medical conditions that would restrict their ability to participate safely
in all aspects of the band program (i.e. heart, breathing, diabetes, joint problems) will be required to have a physical and provide a doctor’s
release before they can be included in rehearsals and performances. The medical form must be completed and returned to the Director
by the end of band camp. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Special trips
One of the bonuses of being in the Statesville High School Band revolves around our travel opportunities. While many organizations dream
about taking trips together, we are in the unique position to make these dreams come true. It serves as positive testimony to the work ethic of
our band members, and is one of the privileges we enjoy as a group. There are additional expectations attached to group travel. When we
accept an invitation to perform away from our home, we also assume the responsibilities of being ambassadors and representatives of our
band, our school, and our community. Individual considerations now become secondary to the entire organization’s welfare. The term good
behavior takes on a new meaning as we assume the role of musical emissaries. Your best effort is now “the norm” and you will be asked to rise
above it many times during our trip, displaying the ultimate in appropriate manners and personal deportment. We will be judged not by our
intentions, but by our behavior. There are no second chances at a first impression.; therefore, we must pledge ourselves to emulating
excellence both in our musical and social performances. The worth of our band will be based on the attitude generated by our band
members. The reputation of the band is in your hands. Treat it with dignity.
We will take a major trip every two years if possible. If funds allow, we could take additional trips. This will be decided by the band director
and SHS Band Fans organization.. If you have not paid your band fees, you will not be allowed to go on special trips
14.
Fundraising
The band and Band Fans will have a variety of fundraisers throughout the year. Several of our major fundraisers include concession stands for
home varsity and jv football games, candy, wreaths, corn hole tournaments, etc. All band members are expected to
participate. Announcements of fundraisers will be made as soon as decisions are made. As of March 2013, a portion of each fundraiser goes
towards a student’s “individual” payment funds. For every fundraiser, every item that a student sells from 11 items and up, $2 per item ( after
10 items) goes into the student’s individual fund kept by the band fans. Individual funds will be applied to band fees, all county, all district, all
state fees, trip fees, and band banquet. The band director will keep a running spreadsheet of student fees of this information.
15. Full Band Schedule
A schedule of all band rehearsals, activities, performances and fundraisers will be given to all students at the end of each school year for the
next school year. Updated schedules will be given when changes are made. This handbook and all forms, as well as the schedule, will also be
available on line on the band director’s school web page.

SHS Band Fans General Information
“Out of all the things I do, I think being a Band Fan is the most important and satisfying.”
Mission Statement
Working to build and maintain an organization of parents dedicated to providing moral and financial support for the Statesville High
School (SHS) Band Activities.
Welcome
The Statesville High School Band Fans (SHSBF) would like to thank you for taking the opportunity to understand both the SHS Band
Program and the Band Fans role in creating a successful band program.
What are Band Fans?
The SHSBF is organized to support the Band Department of our high school. Parents of band members are automatically included as
SHSBF general membership. It is however, not necessary to have a student in the band to be an active member. Anyone interested in
supporting the Band Department of the high school may join. The association works to encourage and maintain an enthusiastic interest
within the school and community in the various activities of the SHS Band Activities. We do not make any policy decisions for the school,
band director, bands, or band staff.
Since the Band activities are costly and not completely covered by the School Board Budget, it is primarily a self-funded program
overseen by the SHSBF. Being that SHSBF is a support function for the SHS Band Programs, it is responsible for an annual budget that
raises money to support these activities through concession stands, special events, and other fundraisers.
SHSBF support includes financing or volunteering for all band activities such as concerts, parades, district and regional collaborative
bands, solo and ensemble performances, and celebration banquets as well as award ceremonies.
PARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
SHOW YOUR SPIRIT
Marching Band Season is a busy and exciting time in your child’s life and yours. Parental support is extremely important. Your son
and/or daughter puts in many long hours of hard work to be a member of the band. Please show your support by your attendance at
exhibitions, football games, marching competitions, and concerts. This means a great deal to your child (more than they may tell you).
1.
2.
Concession sales: During the football season the band runs the visitor’s side concession stand. As a rule we will alternate
parents for each game. This will allow all parents the opportunity to see and hear their child play.
Parent chaperones: Chaperones are needed to assist at all games, to ensure the safety of the students. Also during band
events such as parades, competitions, banquets and fundraisers.
(ALL parents/volunteers that will be working with the band MUST fill out a background check form. This is required by
Iredell-Statesville Schools.)
3.
Pit Crew/Pit Dad’s: Band parents are needed to assist in unloading equipment and uniforms on the trucks. Parents may be
needed to drive equipment truck(s) to the competitions.
4.
Band Mom's: Be present at home football games, parades and band competitions to assist with band preparations.
It is important when you or your student sign up to assist with a fund raising activity, please fulfill your commitment at that
scheduled time. You must find a substitute if you cannot participate at your scheduled time. Please notify the president of the change
in advance.
****Everyone NOT VOLUNTEERING and attending games is required to pay admission (even if you just want to see the band).
