Course Objectives: Listening- The students will develop listening comprehension skills through exposure to various listening activities from fluent speakers as well as their teachers, and peers. Speaking- The students will develop confidence using Spanish to communicate in situations such as: expressing feelings, responding to basic questions, greeting others, expressing ideas and opinions, talking freely in the target language, asking/giving directions, describing their daily life and surroundings in a variety of situations. Reading- The students will develop reading comprehension skills through exposure to sight vocabulary, pictures as clue to meaning, a variety of reading strategies (silent, group, pairs), cognates, decoding words and the use of a glossary and dictionary. Writing- The students will develop writing skills through exposure to a new alphabet, spelling, and phonemic awareness. The students will write basic sentences, dialogues, compositions, creative writing, personal letters, responses to questions and directed statements on a variety of topics. Culture- The students will learn to use appropriate formal and informal speech. In addition, the student will become aware of the daily life and customs of the Spanish speaking countries as well as their respective geography and history. Credit Information: This course provides one credit toward fulfilling the foreign language requirements for an Advanced Studies Diploma (three years of one language or two years each of two languages). Students who receive credit for Spanish I in middle school may count this course in meeting both credit and subject area graduation requirements. Classroom Supplies: One composition notebook Spanish- English Dictionary One 1” binder and seven dividers Loose leaf paper Pencils and eraser 1 packet of white index cards 3x5 Class Expectations: Practice every day Participate in class Be responsible (come prepared to class, turn in homework on time and complete classwork) Speak Spanish Classroom guidelines: Follow the classroom procedure all the time. (procedures will be attached to your notebook the first day of class) M6 is a FOOD FREE classroom and a GUM free classroom Be on time Bring a pass if you are late Listen and raise your hand to talk or ask questions Be respectful with your classmates, teacher and school property. Bring your supplies every day Electronic devices should remain in student’s locker all the time. *This does not apply to medical devices. Failure to comply with the established class guidelines will entail the following consequences: first offense: dialogue with the student second offense: lunch detention third offense: disciplinary note and/or notification to parents fourth offense: referral to the counselor and the "Dean" Grading: will be based on a weighted scale. The breakdown is as follows: Tests/Projects Quizzes and mini projects Classwork Homework (practice) 40% 35% 20% 05% Make Up Work: For each day absent, students will have 1 day to make up missed work. Assignments will be posted on the teacher’s website, and a physical copy will be available in the classroom. Students are responsible completing all missed work. Late Work: Homework and projects done outside of class are expected to be completed and turned in on time. Homework: May be turned in 1 class period late for half credit. Projects: 5 points will be deducted for each class period that the project is not turned in. Re-Take Policy: Students who earn lower than 70% on a quiz may re-take the test within two weeks. They must participate in remediation before taking the quiz. Student should make arrangements to meet with the teacher for review before the re-take. The two scores will be averaged for a final test grade. Students are able to re-take only one time. Plagiarism or copying: Plagiarism and copying will not be tolerated under any circumstances. A student who does not comply with this rule will receive a zero (0) automatically. There are no exceptions to this rule. Respect and honesty are required in the class. No retakes will be allowed. Electronic Devices: Electronic devices (cellphone, IPod, IPad) will be allowed ONLY for lesson purposes, student will be notify in advance when devices will be part of a lesson. All electronic device should be locked in the student locker during class hours. This rule does not apply to medical devices.
