For this project, you will be creating a free verse poem which you will present to the class. The poem is worth 50 points and the presentation is worth 50 points, for a total grade of 100 points in Phoenix. Poem Requirements: Formative Assessments: □ Brainstorming ideas for your topic □ Drafting your poem in your writer’s journal Summative Assessment: □ Free Verse (a poem that doesn’t have a regular rhythm or rhyme scheme) □ Minimum of 16 lines □ Minimum of 3 different poetic devices. Only the following poetic devices will be considered for this project: alliteration, hyperbole, imagery, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, repetition, end/external rhyme (no pattern), internal rhyme, simile □ Creative title that reflects the topic of the poem □ Published – either typed or neatly hand written □ Typed: title and poem centered on the page. Graphics can be added that enhance your poem. □ Hand written: title centered on the page, best handwriting, and decorated □ Brief, annotated explanation of poem. Your short response should address the following: theme of your poem, why you chose the poetic devices you used, why you chose this topic, and a brief explanation of the poem as needed. Oral Presentation Requirements: □ Practice a poem of your choice (it can be the free verse poem you wrote, or your favorite poem – 16 lines minimum) – you don’t want to read it cold in front of the class. □ Introduce yourself to the class. □ Give the title of the poem. □ Recite the poem. You should have practiced enough that you have memorized. □ If you recite your poem, give a brief explanation of the poem. □ If you recite a poem that was written by someone else, explain why you chose that poem and a brief explanation of the meaning of the poem. (You cannot read any of the poems that we reviewed in class.)
