three branches of
government?
Agenda:
1. Class Discussion: Powers of the 3 branches of government
2. 3 Branches game
3. Create Visual Metaphor: Powers of the 3 branches
4. Video: First 5 Presidents https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1dGQA883e8
Federal System of Government:
A system that divides power between the national and state
governments.
National Government:
State Government:
3 Branches of Government:
Checks and Balances:
The 3 branches have the power to check each others power so no
one branch gets too powerful.
3 Branches of Government Game!
We will be reading a series of actions that the U.S. government
might take. After we read the government action, you will refer to
your charts to determine 2 facts:
1. Which branch of government has the power to do this
2. What other branches can do to “check” such power.
3 Branches of Government Game!
1.
I will read the “action card,” example: “A Supreme Court Justice needs to be
nominated.”
2.
Look at your chart and figure out if your branch of government has this power.
3.
If it does, send the card around your table and have everyone at your table initial
it.
4.
If everybody has signed the card before another branch “checks” your power, you
get a point.
5.
While the branch of government is signing the card, other branches should look at
their chart and determine whether they can “check” the power. If you can, tell
your group, everyone in your group point to your chart to identify the appropriate
“check.” Then, all group members should snap their fingers at the same time. If
you snap your fingers before the first branch has finished signing their card, you
get a point.
Create a Visual Metaphor:
Create a visual metaphor to represent how the 3 branches of
government share and balance the power of the national
government. Write 3-5 sentences describing why you chose this
metaphor.
Metaphor: a thing regarded as representative of something else
