#6 - Quadratic Equations

A Quadratic Equation is an equation with a degree of two. A quadratic equation has the standard form: ax

2  bx

Methods To Solve Quadratic Equations

1. Factoring – if possible

1.

Square Root Method – when there is an x

2

term and a constant, but no x term

2.

Completing the Square – creating a perfect square trinomial, factoring, then square root

3.

Quadratic Formula – when none of the other methods work, but can be used for any quadratic equation; x

  b

2 

4 ac

2 a

**Make sure your solutions use the correct notation of ±! And that all solutions are simplified completely! (No negative radicands!)

Solving a quadratic equation could also be referred to as determining the

roots or zeros of the function.
