Materials: a variety of classroom objects; string; scissors
Directions:
1. Each child chooses a classroom object and estimates the length of the object by
cutting a string the estimated length.
2. Have each child then compare the length of the string with the actual object.
3. Is the string longer or shorter than the object?
Variations:
1. Give pairs of children a length of string.
2. They search for things that are about the same length as their string.
3. Children can keep a record by drawing pictures.
Estimate the circumference of a pumpkin or basketball.
