Reading Log As you may know reading is one of the best things we can do to help us learn more. The more a child reads they will develop a better vocabulary and perform better in school. Attached is a reading log for you and your child to fill out. Our goal as a class is to read 10 minutes a night. They will bring home library books and each week I will send home 2 sight word books. The sight word books go out on Monday and are due the following Friday. If a book sent home is not returned, no new books will be sent home until the book is returned. Please sign the reading log every time you read with your child. Without a parent/guardian signature, I cannot count the time. As soon as their monthly goal is met they will receive a reading certificate for a free pizza (Pizza Hut) through our school reading plan, Book IT! There is also a way that you can track them digitally through the Book IT app. See attached sheet. Different ways to read with your child: Reading Aloud- This is when you read the book to your child, pointing to each word as you go along. Echo Reading- This is when you read a word, phrase or sentence and have your child repeat after you. Filling in the blank- This is when you read most of the words but pause on words your child may know, like sight words. Student Read- If your child knows the book well enough they can read it to you with/ without your help. Other Activities to enhance your child’s reading skills: Word or Letter hunt- Have them find capital, lowercase or certain letter. You could also have them point to the sight words they see. Say words from the story and have your child guess the beginning middle and ending sounds. Beginning sounds is something that you can start now, however middle and ending sounds may not be ideal for some students until later in the year. Listen for rhyming words Retell- Have your child retell the events in the story from beginning to end. Questions- Come up with some questions from the story to ask your child. Who are the characters, what is the setting, etc.
