Instruction will focus on phonics, fluency, comprehension, critical thinking, vocabulary, reading engagement, viewing, and test-taking. It will be differentiated according to students’ needs. This class is not intended as a resource class or curriculum support for language arts but as an interactive workshop designed to increase reading competence. Course Goals: Be skillful by using strategies to decode and comprehend text Increase their vocabulary Recognize that reading is meaning making Read and comprehend a variety of genres Make connections with text: text to text, text to self, text to world Be engaged in reading Feel capable and confident as readers Be critical thinkers View visual messages thoughtfully and critically both in print and non-print materials Apply reading skills and strategies to content areas Respond to literature orally and/or in writing Read on grade level or at least, make one year’s growth in reading (Taken from LCPS Course Syllabus Basic Components of the Course: Teacher read aloud Independent reading time Reading workshop activities Mini-lessons on specific reading skills Notebook/Portfolio assessment
