Map and Globe Study Guide A globe is a round model of the earth. A map is a flat way to show the earth or any location. Maps are drawn from a bird’s eye view (from above). A compass rose shows the cardinal directions (N, E, S, W) on a map or globe. * “Never Eat Slimy Worms” or “Never Eat Soggy Waffles” are good ways to remember the order of the letters on the compass rose. If you’re looking at a map, notice the compass rose, and then find which ways are north, east, south, and west on that map. A map key or map legend shows the symbols and their meanings on a map. Students should recognize symbols on a map legend (land, water, cities, or roads). A symbol is a picture that stands for something on a map.
