Mrs. McInnis’s Monday Memo
Here’s what’s happening in our class the week of September 21st:
Reading-This week students will be continuing their independent reading and
writing project while I work with our new guided reading groups.
Language-Along with reviewing basic editing skills and conjunctions, students will
continue writing a descriptive paragraph using the steps of the writing process.
Students are doing a great job of revising and editing with partners.
Social Studies-This week we will be working on a Regions Flip Book to review the
regions of Virginia. We will have a Virginia Waterways Quiz Thursday. Students
need to identify the four major rivers, cities on those rivers, Lake Drummond, and
the bay and ocean. They will be bringing home their notebooks to review the
material. Their Virginia Studies Weekly newspapers are also a great way to help
them study.
Math-We are reviewing place value skills this week as well as starting addition
computation and problem solving. Rounding larger numbers is a skill that continues
to need some practice (they have to be able to round up to the nearest million).
Students will have a Place Value Unit Test on Friday. Homework this week will
cover the skills that will be assessed on the test. Continue to study those addition
and subtraction facts for timed tests.
Reminders and important dates:
1. The Reading Log is due at the end of the first grading period. Students should read
10 books and record these on the log. It is in the yellow homework folder. They may
record books read at home and at school. These should be chapter books for fiction
(at least 100 pages each). I have posted my Volunteer Calendars for September and
October on my website. If you have generously volunteered to help, please look at it
and let me know if it does NOT work out for your schedule!
2. Most students are doing a great job of getting their planners signed each night. Ask
your child about how they are doing on the punch card!
3. During math class students will be working on an independent packet each week
while Miss Hill and I are working with small groups or assisting individual students.
These will come home the following week in the Monday Folders. Please make sure
you look for any comments from me on the front of these packets. Some students
may need to continue to practice certain skills at home, but I do not require that the
packets be returned to school. Use it as you feel necessary to help your child with
skills that may be difficult.
4. Keep collecting and sending in the box tops.
5. ***Continue to next page!
6. Thanks to all of the families who have joined the PTO so far this year! Please join- it’s
only $10 and they do so much for our school!
7. Please do not bring your student’s homework to school if it is forgotten at home.
Make it your child’s responsibility to put it in the backpack each evening when it is
completed. Students do not get credit for homework if it is not here first thing in the
morning!
8. If you read today’s Monday Memo on Monday, please draw a football next to your
initials in the planner tonight. Your child will get something special!
9. Please remember to have your child complete Reflex (to the green light) and 20
minutes of Dreambox each week! Please let me know if you have a problem with
either of these at home.
10. Our PE days are Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Girls should wear appropriate shoes
on those days!
11. Look for an email about conferences next week so you can sign up for a time that
works for you on my Sign-up Genius.
12. Thank you Mrs. Garza for volunteering to type up a class directory for us!
