In math, the students are starting graphing. They will be analyzing and creating bar, picture, and pictographs. Then we will be onto probability. The graphing and probability units are fun units that the kids really seem to enjoy learning about. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts at home. Students are encouraged to use I-READY Reading and Math along with Reflex at home. Using these programs at school and home is making a huge difference in their math instruction and making them a more confident math learner. In science, we have started learning about magnets. The students are very interested in experimenting and learning about magnets. We are planning to test on Friday January 15th. Our final unit this quarter will be learning about seasonal changes. In language arts, we are continuing to work on comprehension, fluency, vocabulary and accuracy in both fiction /nonfiction texts. Please remember to read each night. 2nd grade is also beginning our small moments and personal narrative unit. The students are writing about a small moment they have experienced and expand it using details. The students are doing a great job. Just a reminder!! Please remember to send your child to school with a warm coat and a hat and gloves. We do try to go outside for recess every day and get some fresh air if the weather permits. Names inside coats, hats, and gloves are helpful. Continue to check agenda and sign it daily. Please bring agenda to school everyday. Please check with your student that they still have crayons, markers, and scissors. Some students need new supplies. I am also looking for additional glue sticks for the classroom. Classroom happenings: In December, we created a kindness box full of school supplies for Mrs. Chavez, a first grade teacher that is new to teaching and new to Algonkian. She was so surprised and thankful for everything. We had so many donations that we had enough to create a kindness box as soon as we came back from break for a school that was damaged by a tornado in TX. The students created cards to go with the school supplies. Thank you for all the donations. We continue to use twitter to share our math learning. Once a week, we take part in a math chat and answer the posted question. We also did a reader’s theater with our FL pen pals. It was so fun to connect online and see our pen pals. Please follow us @MrsCarlsonclass on twitter to see what we are up to in our classroom. More fun things are coming up this month. Thanks for all you do! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!!
