DESCRIPTION:
Keyboarding is an essential skill in academic and occupational areas. This
course provides an introduction to and/or refinement of touch skills for entering
alphabetic, numeric, and symbol information. Keyboarding is a required
foundation course for all Business occupational/technical programs requiring the
use of the computer. As a basic communications course, students learn to key
the touch system and format documents with Word. Students apply their
keyboarding skills to the production of letters, memos, tables, and reports.

Demonstrate Workplace Readiness Skills
Address elements of student life.
Identify computer system components.
Describe ergonomic and repetitive strain injury guidelines as related to
safe computer use.
Maintain workstation, equipment, materials, and supplies.
Boot, access, reboot, and shut down an operating system and start and
exit software programs.
Input data and commands using peripherals.
Key alphabetic, numeric, and symbolic information using touch system
and correct techniques.
Manipulate data/software/operating system using ribbons, launchers,
icons, and pull-down menu, mouse, and function keys.
Use file external storage device and online management techniques.
Improve keyboarding techniques.
Increase keyboarding speed and accuracy.
Proofread copy, using proofreaders’ marks.
Write letters, memos, e-mails, reports, blogs, outlines and tables, using
the English writing process.
Key and format letters, memos, e-mails, reports, outlines, columns, and
tables.
Edit copy.
Key, format, and merge addresses on labels and envelopes.
Produce documents incorporating graphic elements, including tables
and graphs.








REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Obtain assistance for preparing documents from electronic and hardcopy references and documentation.
Troubleshoot computer problems.
Correlate keyboarding skills with the appropriate career pathways.
Develop and update a resume.
Complete an online and/or written job application form.
Create an electronic and/or hard-copy portfolio containing
representative samples of student work.
Identify potential employment barriers for nontraditional groups and
ways to overcome the barriers.
Learn how to navigate the online world and understand online privacy,
security, cyber bullying, digital relationships and the viral nature of the
web.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS:  R E S P E C T

 Arrive inside classroom before the bell rings and get straight to work.
(Warm up assignment will be posted daily on front board)
 Have all materials at your desk every day:
(Folder and writing utensil)
 Demonstrate honor, integrity, and personal responsibility at all times.
(On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on
any assignment and will continually strive to better myself through my
work ethic)
 Use the restroom and get water before or after class to minimize lost
instruction time.
(You may bring water to class and emergency exceptions will be made)
 Hand in assignments on time by due dates. Makeup/missing work is
your responsibility.
(Computer lab is available before school at 8:15AM and during
resource to makeup work or for extra practice)
 Use Internet properly at appropriate times when directed by the teacher.
 Keep all personal belongings out of sight or in your locker.
(Cell phones, makeup, etc. and food/non-water drink)
 Report any damages, computer problems, or other changes made to
your workstation as soon as they are discovered.
 Continue working until the teacher tells the class to cleanup.

Students will be assessed using two different methods.
When first learning concepts, often times the learning progression scale
will be used. This scale will not affect the student’s course grade. Rather it
gives immediate and meaningful feedback to the student on his or her
learning.

After the concept has been practiced, students will be assessed using a
traditional LCPS grading scale. This scale will affect the student’s course
grade.

Retesting Policy: In order to establish consistent and fair grading practices, a retesting policy has been
established within the CTE department on when and how often students may retake assessments. Students
receiving 70% or higher on an assessment may have the opportunity to complete a retake at the teacher’s
discretion. Additional work will need to be completed before the retake is granted. Any student receiving
less than 70% on an assessment will be required to retake and complete additional work.

Calendar:
Homework and assignments will be posted weekly on
the website. Upcoming dates of tests, quizzes, timed
writings, and projects will be posted on a regular basis.
Typing Games:
Frustrated that your typing speed isn’t improving?
Want to increase you timed writing grade? Practicing
at home on the days you don’t have keyboarding is the
best way to improve your typing skills!
My Digital Life: Students are required to complete this semester-long
online course consisting of seven learning modules. Topics include
computers, wireless communication, the viral world, Internet resources,
multimedia products, digital relationships and respect, and the future of
technology. Each student is encouraged to work at his or her own pace
through the course as time permits in class. Students who don’t find class
time to complete the modules are required to finish them during resource or
at home. The course is assigned during the first week of class and is due on
the final day of class.
Bring Your Own Technology: Because the typing lessons must be
completed on network software, students are required to use the school
computers provided in the lab. However, students may bring a personal
device to be used for educational purposes at the teacher’s discretion.
