These groups are based upon the needs of the students and their reading levels, so the children receive instruction tailored to their needs as readers. Great readers READ! Please make sure your child is reading every night. Here are some ways to help your child as they read to you: Make sure they pay attention to the punctuation. When stuck on a word, remind them to use their strategies. Ask them to start at the beginning and tell you everything that happened in the story. Ask if this story reminds them of something that happened to them or something they read in another book. Writing Workshop This month students will continue to work on writing their own pieces during writing workshop. The children will have opportunities to respond to a prompt and free write. We will continue to work on writing complete sentences which include beginning with a capital letter and using end punctuation. We will continue practicing proper D’Nealian handwriting. This lays the framework for the transition to cursive that takes place at the end of second grade and into next year. Encourage your child to be using their best handwriting while completing assignments at home! Math In math this month we will continue with addition and subtraction facts so they become automatic. Please continue to practice those facts at home! Flash cards are a great way to increase accuracy and speed. We will also work on adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers.
