Fifth Grade Fourth Quarter Plans 2007 Math During the fourth nine weeks students will focus on measurement and investigate problems involving probability. Students will also work on reading and interpreting data from graphs. Students will continue to investigate algebraic concepts and review previously learned concepts. (SOL 5.17, 5.19, 5.20, 5.21) Language Arts During the fourth nine weeks, the students will continue to explore reading, writing, and vocabulary skills using novels and reader’s theater as well as poetry. Novels and other reading materials specific to fifth grade will be used as a guide for learning unfamiliar words, understanding and evaluating poetry. In addition, students will learn to synthesize and cite information from a variety of resources. This term, we will begin our focus on figurative language and poetry. We will continue our study of story elements (character, setting, plot and dialogue), summarizing, sequence, reference sources, paraphrasing, author’s purpose, context clues, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, multiple-meaning words, root words, prefixes, suffixes, and library skills. (SOL 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6,5.7, 5.8, 5.9) Science Students will investigate matter and the effect temperature has on each of the three forms. They will also develop an understanding of atoms, molecules, elements, and compounds. Students will then review weather and circuits from 4th grade. (SOL 4.6, 5.2, 5.4) Social Studies Students will be studying the geography and history of the Rocky Mountain, Pacific, and Southwest Regions of the United States.
