Dear Parents,
Hard to believe that October is already upon us! The children have settled into the
3rd grade learning routines such as, completing independent seatwork assignments, working cooperatively in learning groups, listening to the teacher, and following directions promptly without excessive talking. Ask them to repeat the classroom rules. There are 5 altogether with gestures.
We have started filling our brownie pan for good behavior and compliments from other teachers. We get a “brownie” when we hear a compliment for good class behavior while walking quietly in the hallways and during our specials. We have a class chosen reward when the pan is all filled
We are full swing into independent reading and using strategies to improve overall comprehension. Our motto is “Reading Is Thinking! We are reading fiction/ nonfiction, and writing reading responses such as predictions, connections, and questions as “thought jots” in our reading response journals. Your child should be reading independently each night for at least 15 minutes and recording it in the reading log in the reading journal. We have begun Developmental Reading
Assessments this week, and after these are finished we will begin guided reading group work.
For science class students will begin recording data in their “Autumn Journals”.
Please look for this nightly in your child’s red homework folder. I will have them write in the agenda if they are required to fill in a page. They can do extra pages over the weekend if they want to. The directions for this assignment are printed in the front of the “Autumn Journal”, and I sent letters home explaining what we are using it for. It should be kept in the red homework folder until it is due at the end of this month. This will be scored as a test grade for scientific method. I am helping students to record high and low temps, moon phase, and sunset data. They can also do this at home using the science links from my webpage on the Horizon website. I have shown all students how to access this information in class. We are also studying matter and physical properties in science.
Students are scored with a 1,2,3 or 4 with a 4 being the highest. I encourage all students to aim for 3’s and 4’s in all class work and tests. Any daily class seat work below a 3 may be corrected and returned for an improved score. Tests and quiz grades are final.
FLE booklets have NOT been delivered to our school, however you may access that information online at the LCPS website. If you want your child to opt out please let me know. I have received some opt out signed forms from parents already, I am just reminding those who may have forgotten.
Please do not send your child with sugary dessert snacks such as cookies, pastries, or candy. Thanks for bringing in a DRY snack that can be eaten WHILE READING as our snack time is during our reading time.
Ask your child to tell you something new they have learned each day, and let them know how proud you are of all they have accomplished in school so far. We have a great class!

Thank you for always checking your child’s RED homework folder and signing the school
agenda each night for homework assignments. When a student reaches 15 ticket punches, one for each homework turned in, they get to pick something out of the grab box as a recognition for a job well done.
Anytime you have questions about anything, please feel free to leave me a note in your child’s folder, email me (not for dismissal changes) or call the office and leave a message. I will respond as soon as possible. Enjoy Autumn!
